Auggies drop 2-1 decision to Knights

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Suffering just its second setback of the season, the Augsburg University women's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to Carleton College in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Wednesday afternoon.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Carleton 2, Augsburg 1
LOCATION: Bell Field, Northfield, Minn.
RECORDS: Augsburg 7-2-2 overall (2-2-2 MIAC), Carleton 9-1-1 overall (4-0-1 MIAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
• After a scoreless first half, the Knights struck first with a goal in the 72nd minute to take a 1-0 lead. Augsburg did not take long to respond, tying the game 1-1 when Jayla Ponce (SR, Kuna, Idaho/Kuna HS) scored her fifth goal of the season in the 75th minute.
• Unfortunately for the Auggies, the tie proved to be short lived as the Knights scored the eventual game-winner less than five minutes later in the 80th minute on a penalty kick.
• The Knights held a distinct advantage in shots, taking 16 to Augsburg's four. Auggie goalkeeper Iz Shuster (SR, Waconia, Minn./Waconia HS) made four saves compared to just one save for the Knights' keeper.
Ponce and Abby Rosebur (SO, South St. Paul, Minn./South St. Paul HS) were the only Auggies to record a shot on goal, while McKenna Nachreiner (FY, Waunakee, Wis./Waunakee HS) took the other two shots for Augsburg.

FOR THE FOES

• Claire Burbery and Piper Dean scored goals for the Knights with Kathryn Kresse adding an assist on the first goal.

UP NEXT

• Augsburg will head to Moorhead, Minn. to take on Concordia-Moorhead in MIAC play on Saturday at 3:30 pm.
