Augsburg splits in home triangular

MINNEAPOLIS – The Augsburg University volleyball team hosted a triangular with St. Olaf College and the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire on Saturday evening, topping the Oles 3-1 in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play and falling to the Blugolds 3-1 in nonconference play at Si Melby Hall.

AUGSBURG 3, ST. OLAF 1
• After the Oles took set one 25-20, the Auggies broke an 11-11 tie in set two with eight consecutive points to create breathing room on the way to a 25-20 set win of their own.
• Facing set point with St. Olaf leading 25-24 in set three, Augsburg battled back to win three-straight points to take the set 27-25.
• Though they fell in a 6-0 hole to open set four, Augsburg recovered to win the set 25-22 and take the match 3-1.
• As a team, St. Olaf boasted the more efficient attack as they outhit Augsburg .234 to .208 in the match.
Bri Van Well (SR, Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury HS) was outstanding for Augsburg, leading the team with 19 kills while hitting .356. Madison Gully (JR, Cedar, Minn./St. Francis HS) was second on the team with 13 kills with a .353 hitting percentage while Emily Kaup (JR, Omaha, Neb./Duchesne Academy) also reached double figures with 10 kills.
Torrie Rehder (JR, Goodhue, Minn./Goodhue HS) was strong in the back row with 27 digs for Augsburg. Angel Vo (JR, Blaine, Minn./Mounds View HS) was the go-to setter with 28 set assists.

UW-EAU CLAIRE 3, AUGSBURG 1

• Augsburg claimed a contested first set 25-23, but the Blugolds would take set two 25-20 before edging Augsburg 26-24 in both sets three and four to take the match in four sets.
• The Blugolds hit .140 as a team while Augsburg hit .099 in the match.
• Van Well once again led the Augsburg attack with 17 kills on a .250 hitting clip and Kaup finished second on the team with 10 kills, also adding 12 digs for the double-double.
• The defensive effort was more balanced for Augsburg as Rehder led the Auggies with 21 digs, Brier Ziemer (SO, Carver, Minn./Chaska HS) finished with 15 digs, and Vo and Elise Uphoff (FY, Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield HS) added 13 each. Vo also led the Auggies in set assists with 21, notching her sixth double-double of the season.

FOR THE FOES
• Anysia Callie led the Oles with 20 kills.
• Darienne Andre and Avery Pennekamp finished with 13 kills each for the Blugolds.
