Auggies wrap up 2023 season with loss at Bethel

ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – The Augsburg University volleyball team saw its 2023 campaign come to an end on Friday evening, falling to Bethel University in three sets in its regular season finale.

THE BASICS 
FINAL SCORE: Bethel 3, Augsburg 0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-17)
LOCATION: Robertson Center, Arden Hills, Minn.
RECORDS: Augsburg 15-14 overall (6-5 MIAC), Bethel 11-14 overall (6-5 MIAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Tied at 14 each in the opening set, the Royals put together a string of four consecutive points, shortly followed by another five-point run, to take a commanding lead on the way to a 25-19 set win.
• The Auggies led 17-16 late in set two, but the Royals finished strong once again with nine of the final ten points to take the set 25-18 and take a 2-0 lead in the match.
• Tied at eight each in the third set, the Royals slowly began to pull away, eventually claiming a 25-17 set win to complete the sweep.
• As a team, the Auggies were outhit .312 to .128 in the match. The Royals also held advantages in kills (44-33), digs (57-49), and assists (42-33).
• Bri Van Well (SR, Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury HS) led the Augsburg attackers as she has for most of the season, hitting .200 and finishing with 12 kills and seven digs. Emily Kaup (Omaha, Neb./Duchesne Academy HS) was second on the team with seven kills, also adding eight digs.
• Torrie Rehder (JR, Goodhue, Minn./Goodhue HS) and Brier Ziemer (SO, Carver, Minn./Chaska HS) led the defensive effort as they tied for the team lead with 11 digs each. Angel Vo (SR, Blaine, Minn./Mounds View HS) added seven digs and 18 set assists for the Auggies.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE

• With the loss, the Auggies end the season at 6-5 in conference play, and in a four-way tie for fourth place in the MIAC with Concordia-Moorhead, St. Catherine, and Bethel. Due to conference tiebreakers, the Cobbers will be the sixth seed in the MIAC Playoffs while the Wildcats and Royals will be the fourth and fifth seeds, and the Auggies find themselves on the outside of the playoff picture.
• The game marked the final collegiate matches for Augsburg seniors Bri Van Well and Angel Vo.
