Auggies top Scots in high-scoring shootout

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Augsburg University football team made the short trip across the river to take on Macalester College in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Scots 42-34 at Macalester Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• The game quickly turned into an offensive shootout, with both teams alternating touchdowns on each of the game's first six drives to make it 21-21 midway through the second quarter. Following a Macalester punt, the first of the game, quarterback Cade Sheehan (SR, Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) threw his fourth touchdown pass of the game to give the Auggies a 28-21 lead. On the ensuing drive, Tramone Nevels (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest HS) picked off a Macalester pass and returned it 60 yards to the house to make it 35-21 in favor of the Auggies at halftime.
• Early in the fourth quarter, DJ Monroe (SR, Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee HS) finished off a 12-play, 55-yard Auggie drive with a one-yard rushing touchdown to give Augsburg a 42-21 lead. The Scots would go on to score back-to-back touchdowns after recovering an onside kick to make it 42-34, but the Auggies received the ball with a 3:27 remaining and managed to kill the clock and seal the win.
• The game was an offensive shootout from the get-go, with Macalester narrowly outgaining the Auggies 478 to 406 in total yards. The Scots did most of their damage through the air with 434 passing yards and just 44 rushing yards, while the Auggies featured a more balanced approach with 220 passing yards and 186 yards on the ground.  
• Quarterback Cade Sheehan (SR, Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) completed 18 of his 27 passes for 220 yards and four touchdowns, with each of the scores coming in the first half. Braden Tretter (SR, Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice HS) was Sheehan's top target, hauling in eight receptions for a season-high 130 yards and a touchdown. Dominic Smith (JR, White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) added four catches for 48 yards and two scores while Tyrone Wilson (So, Ellendale, Minn./New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva HS) caught two passes for eight yards, including a touchdown reception.
• Monroe was the featured running back for most of the afternoon, gaining 94 yards and finding the end zone once on his 17 rushing attempts. Tre Lee (SR, Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park HS) managed 45 yards on eight carries while Sheehan added 61 yards on 10 carries.
• Nevels was a force for the Auggie defense, leading the team with eight total tackles, including one for a loss, while also notching two pass breakups and an interception returned for a touchdown. Darnell Harper (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest HS) was second on the team with seven tackles. Jax Bokman (SO, Faribault, Minn./Bethlehem Academy HS) had another strong game, tallying six tackles and breaking up two passes. Conner Elliott (SO, Rosemount, Minn./Apple Valley HS) was the sack leader with 1.5 sacks on the afternoon.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

• With the win, Augsburg extends its winning streak over Macalester to 17 games. The Scots last defeated the Auggies in November of 1990.

FOR THE FOES
• Macalester quarterback Michael Nadeau had a phenomenal outing, completing 35 of his 53 passes for 434 yards and five touchdowns against one interception.  
• Noah Bresson and Ben Weese led the Macalester defense with nine tackles each.

• Augsburg will host Carleton College next Saturday (11/11) at 1 pm in a MIAC Championship Week clash at Edor Nelson Field.
