Auggie offense explodes in 8-1 rout of Yellowjackets

SUPERIOR, Wis. – Fueled by a five-goal eruption in the second period, the Augsburg University women's hockey team picked up an 8-1 nonconference win over the University of Wisconsin-Superior on Saturday evening.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Augsburg 8, UW-Superior 1
LOCATION: Superior, Wis.
RECORDS: Augsburg 1-2-0 overall, UW-Superior 2-2-0 overall

HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Auggies drew first blood less than five minutes into the game when Nora Stepan (SO, Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview HS) netted her first goal of the season. Later in the period, Ella Olson (FY, Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS) scored the first goal of her career to extend the Auggie lead to two. A Yellowjacket goal late in the period made it 2-1 in favor of Augsburg at the first intermission.
• Just over seven minutes into the second period, the Auggies restored their multi-goal lead when Emily Schoeberl (SO, Eagan, Minn./Eagan HS) scored a five-on-three shorthanded goal. That goal seemed to spark the Auggie offense as Kennedy Stein (SR, Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest HS), Tenley Stewart (SO, Esko, Minn./Esko HS), Claire Jenkins Coffman (SR, Mount Pleasant, Wis./The Prairie School), and Olson each added second-period goals to put the Auggies in front 7-1. Jenkins Coffman would add another goal in the third period to complete the 8-1 rout.
• The Auggies controlled the pace of play throughout the game, outshooting the Yellowjackets by a 47-20 margin and blocking seven shots to UW-Superior's five blocks.
• Playing in just her second collegiate game, Olson had a four-point night with two goals and two assists. For Jenkins Coffman, it marked her first collegiate multi-goal effort.
Grace Bonnell (FY, Madison, Wis./Memorial HS) had a helper on two of Augsburg's goals while Stein, Schoeberl, Emily Cronkhite (JR, Eagan, Minn./Eagan HS), Elizabeth Fagerlind (JR, Kasson, Minn./Kasson-Mantorvillle HS), and Sydney Rydel (SR, Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) had one assist each.
Chloe Stockinger (SR, Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice HS) had a strong outing between the pipes for Augsburg, making 19 saves on the 20 shots she faced.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
• Augsburg's eight goals were its most in a game since an 8-2 win over Bethel last season on January 14. The seven-goal margin of victory was the largest since a 10-0 win over Marian on January 4, 2020.

FOR THE FOES

• Jenna Hoops scored the lone goal of the evening for the Yellowjackets, with an assist going to Kaylin Garner.
• Rose Beeman took the loss in goal for the Yellowjackets, making 22 saves and allowing seven goals.
