Auggies close regular season with sweep of Saints

MINNEAPOLIS -- Scoring three goals in a six-minute span in the second period, the Augsburg University women's hockey team finished its regular season with a 5-2 win and a sweep of a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference series over the College of St. Scholastica on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• After a scoreless first period, St. Scholastica struck first with a goal at the 8:31 mark of the second period. But Augsburg rallied quickly after, scoring three goals in a 5:57 span to take the lead. The Saints cut the lead to 3-2 with a goal late in the second frame, but Augsburg clinched the win with a pair of empty-net goals in the final three minutes of play.
Kennedy Stein (JR, Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest HS) tied the game at 1-1 with a goal off a steal in the slot by Emily Cronkhite (SO, Eagan, Minn./Eagan HS) at the 11:53 mark of the second period, and Stein returned the favor at the 16:01 mark, as her shot from the half-wall was rebounded home by Cronkhite for her team-leading 14th goal of the season.
• On a 4-on-3 power play, Elizabeth Fagerlind (SO, Kasson, Minn./Kasson-Mantorville HS) gained a loose puck at her own blue line, skated up the ice and snapped a wrist shot to the top shelf for her fourth goal of the season.
• The Auggies capped the win with two empty-net goals -- Claire Jenkins Coffman (JR, Mount Pleasant, Wis./The Prairie School) scoring from Julianna Teske (JR, Reedsburg, Wis./Warroad (Minn.) HS) with 2:44 left, and Malia Schubert (JR, Mantorville, Minn./Kasson-Mantorville HS) scoring from Nora Stepan (FY, Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview HS) and Emily Schoeberl (FY, Eagan, Minn./Eagan HS) with 11 seconds left.
• Augsburg outshot St. Scholastica by a 43-27 margin in the game. Making her 10th collegiate start in goal, Mara McClain (SR, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) had 25 saves to pick up the victory.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE 
• The game was the final regular-season contest at Ed Saugestad Rink for five Auggie seniors -- McClain, Payton Allen (SR, St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS), Carleigh Drill (SR, Madison, Wis./Madison East HS), Katie Flynn (SR, Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge HS) and Jenna Gerold (SR, Farmington, Minn./Farmington HS).

FOR THE FOES
• Jessie Ketola scored from Kayla Kasel at the 8:31 mark of the first period for St. Scholastica, and Allie Bussey scored an unassisted goal at the 18:12 mark of the second period.
• St. Scholastica goalie Ashlea Arvidson had 38 saves.

• The No. 2 seed in the five-team MIAC postseason playoffs, Augsburg will host No. 3-seed Saint Benedict in a semifinal game next Saturday (2/25) at 2 p.m. at Ed Saugestad Rink.
