Auggies swept by Falcons in Tucson

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Augsburg University baseball team continued play at the Tucson Invitational Games on Monday, dropping a pair of games to Concordia University-Wisconsin at Kino Sports Complex.

THE BASICS
SCORE: Concordia-Wisconsin 5, Augsburg 4; Concordia-Wisconsin 11, Augsburg 5
LOCATION: Kino Sports Complex, Tucson, Ariz.
RECORDS: Augsburg 2-5 overall, Concordia-Wisconsin 4-4 overall

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS (CONCORDIA-WISCONSIN 5, AUGSBURG 4)
• Augsburg wasted no time getting on the board in game one, with Connor Stoik (SR, Eau Claire, Wis./Eau Claire Memorial HS) bringing Clint Mattson (SR, North Branch, Minn./North Branch HS) around to score on an RBI single and Ty Gage (JR, Eagan, Minn./Eagan HS) scoring Stoik on the following at bat.
• The Falcons responded with a run in the second and two more in the third to take a 3-2 lead heading into the top of the fourth. The Auggies came up with an answer of their own when Jake Skogrand (SO, Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee HS) brought Gage home with an RBI double to tie the game at three runs each.
• The Auggies regained the lead in the sixth when Carson Tomony (SR, Madison, Wis./Madison East HS) brought Stoik around to score with a single.
• With Augsburg leading 4-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh, the Falcons tied the game with a runner scoring on an Auggie fielding error. Just one at bat later, Concordia walked the game off with a bases-loaded single.
Myer Schmitz (SO, Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park HS) made his second start of the season on the mound, allowing eight hits and three earned runs while striking out three in 6.0 innings of work.
• Stoik went 2-3 at the plate for Augsburg in game one with an RBI and two runs scored.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS (CONCORDIA-WISCONSIN 11, AUGSBURG 5)
• After the Falcons struck first with a run in the top of the first, the Auggies responded in the bottom half of the inning when Steven Salz (SR, Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS) plated Noah Thomas (SR, Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge HS) on a sacrifice fly to center field to tie the game 1-1.
• Concordia restored its one-run lead in the top of the third before Augsburg responded once again in the bottom of the same inning when Adam Marshall (SO, Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) batted Thomas in to tie the game at two each.
• Trailing 4-2 after the Falcons added a run in both the fourth and fifth innings, the Auggies put together a big three-run inning in the fifth to take the lead at 5-4 with Michael Weiss (SR, Marion, Iowa/Linn-Marr HS) scoring on a wild pitch, Stoik scoring on an RBI from Marshall, and Salz scoring on an RBI from Skogrand.
• The Falcons tied the game up 5-5 with a run in the sixth and blew the game open with a six-run seventh inning.
• Weiss finished the game 3-4 at the plate with a run scored.

FOR THE FOES
• Kyle Flynn finished the day 5-7 at the plate for the Falcons with two runs batted in and a run scored.

UP NEXT
• The Auggies will continue their Tucson slate on Wednesday with a doubleheader against Wesleyan University (Conn.) with game one scheduled for 11 am (CT).
