Auggies swept by Cobbers in offensive shootouts

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – The Augsburg University baseball team officially opened Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Monday, dropping two high-scoring games to Concordia-Moorhead on the campus of Saint John's University.

THE BASICS
SCORE: Concordia-Moorhead 16, Augsburg 10; Concordia-Moorhead 10, Augsburg 9
LOCATION: Becker Park, Collegeville, Minn.
RECORDS: Augsburg 3-11 overall (0-2 MIAC), Concordia-Moorhead 8-12 overall (2-2 MIAC)

GAME ONE RECAP
• Augsburg opened the scoring in the top of the first when Connor Stoik (SR, Eau Claire, Wis./Eau Claire Memorial HS) brought Michael Weiss (SR, Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar HS) around to score to give the Auggies a 1-0 lead. The Cobbers would go on to score two in the bottom half of the inning to take a 2-1 lead.
• The Auggies regained the lead at 4-2 in the second inning with Brandon Lockhart (SO, Oakdale, Minn./Tartan HS) batting in a run and Lance Nayman (Jr, St. Paul, Minn./Central HS) bringing two home.
• After Concordia-Moorhead added one more in the bottom of the third to cut the deficit to one, the Auggie bats came to life with five runs in the top of the fourth. Stoik got his second RBI of the game with a single to center field and Steven Salz (SR, Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS) followed him up with a three-run home run, his fourth of the season, just one at bat later. Adam Marshall (SO, Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) added one more later in the inning with a single to left field that scored Ty Gage (JR, Eagan, Minn./Eagan HS).
• Following scoreless frames in the bottom of the fourth and the top of the fifth, the Cobbers flipped the script with eight runs in the bottom of the fifth to take an 11-9 advantage. Augsburg got one back in the top of the sixth with Carson Tomony (SR, Madison, Wis./Madison East HS) singling to left to score Salz, but the Cobber bats stayed hot and added five more in the bottom of the sixth to take a 16-10 lead that would hold through the final out.
• Tomony had three hits in four at bats with one batted in while Salz and Marshall were each two-for-three with three and one runs batted in, respectively.

GAME TWO RECAP
• Game two started in a similar fashion with Salz plating Clint Mattson on a single to center field to give Augsburg a 1-0 lead in the middle of the first.
• The Cobbers scored three in their first chance at the plate, but the Auggies quickly tied the game back up in the top of the second with Gage taking a bases-loaded walk to score Tomony and Mattson bringing Lockhart home on a sacrifice fly.
• Following a scoreless third, the Cobbers once again regained the advantage with a run in the fourth. Augsburg took the lead for the first time at 6-4 in the top of the fifth with Stoik hitting an RBI double and Salz scoring two runners with a single up the middle.
• The Cobber bats got hot late in the game once again, scoring five in the seventh to retake the advantage at 9-6.
• Tomony came up huge for the Auggies with two outs in the top of the ninth, hitting a three-run home run, his first of the season and the second of his career, to tie the game at 9-9. Unfortunatley for Augsburg, the Cobbers found the final answer they needed in the bottom of the ninth, taking a bases-loaded walk to walk off the game 10-9.
• Mattson had three hits in four at bats with an RBI while Salz finished game two three-for-five with three RBI to cap off a five hit, six RBI day. Weiss, Stoik, and Marshall also had multi-hit games with two each.
Austin Lang (FY, Anoka, Minn./Anoka HS) had a solid outing in his third career start on the mound, pitching 4.2 innings and striking out six while allowing seven hits and four runs, only two of which were earned.

FOR THE FOES
• Andy Gravdahl had an outstanding day at the plate for the Cobbers, going six-for-nine with three RBI and seven runs scored across both games.

UP NEXT
• The Auggies are set to host Gustavus in a MIAC doubleheader on Wednesday, April 12th starting at 2:30 p.m.
