Auggies fall in game one, game two suspended


NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Augsburg University baseball team traveled to Northfield, Minn. for the second consecutive day on Wednesday, dropping a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game to St. Olaf College before game two was suspended in the seventh inning due to darkness.

GAME ONE RECAP
• The Oles jumped all over the Auggies early in game one, putting up nine runs in the bottom of the first inning.
• Augsburg got on the board with a run in the top of the fourth when Ty Gage (JR, Eagan, Minn./Eagan HS) batted in Connor Stoik (SR, Eau Claire, Wis./Eau Claire Memorial HS). St. Olaf would go on to add three more runs in the bottom of the inning, making it a 12-1 game.
• Making his collegiate debut, Jacob Willis (FY, Columbia, Md./Hammond HS) got his first career hit and RBI with a single to the shortstop that scored Isaac Flynn (SR, Hastings, Minn./Hastings HS) in the top of the seventh. Just one batter later, Matt Krenz (SR, Becker, Minn./Becker HS) came around to score on an Auggie groundout to make it a 12-3 game.  
Alex Hinz (SR, Maplewood, Minn./Mounds Park Academy) pitched 2.1 innings of relief, allowing four hits and two earned runs with three strikeouts. Owen Bernards (JR, St. Paul, Minn./Central HS) pitched the following 1.2 innings, giving up three hits and holding the Oles scoreless. Matty Rones (SR, Bethsda Md./ Walt Whitman HS) also pitched a scoreless inning with just one hit allowed to close the game.

GAME TWO RECAP (SUSPENDED IN 7TH)

• St. Olaf struck first again in game two with a run in the first and three more in the second, but the Auggies responded in a big way with a six-run third inning. Stoik picked up two RBI on a single through the right side while Gage also batted in two runs with a double down the right field line. Carson Tomony (SR, Madison, Wis./Madison East HS) and Jake Skogrand (SO, Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee HS) also brought one run around to score each in the inning.
• Trailing 6-4, the Oles nearly matched the Auggies with five runs in the bottom of the third to regain the lead at 9-6.
Drew Jenkins (FY, Farmington, Minn./Randolph HS) recorded the first RBI of his career in the fifth, singling to right field to score Adam Marshall (SO, Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) and make it a two-run game at 9-7. The Oles put two more on the board in the bottom half of the inning to give themselves a four-run cushion.
• Continuing to respond as they had all game, the Auggies scored four runs in the sixth to knot the game back up at 11 each. Gage notched his third RBI of the game with a groundout that scored Michael Weiss (SR, Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar HS) and Marshall followed him up with a double down the left field line that plated both Steven Salz (SR, Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS) and Stoik. Skogrand provided the final run of the half inning with a fielder's choice that scored Marshall.
• The Oles regained the lead with four runs in the bottom of the seventh to make it 15-11 before the game was halted due to darkness. The game will be completed on Friday, April 21 starting at 4 pm. 
Vinny Rupp (FY, Salt Lake City, Utah/Skyline HS) pitched the first 2.0 innings for the Auggies, allowing nine hits and six runs with two strikeouts. Sean Littman (SO, Bloomington, Minn./Bloomington HS) and Kell Piggott (FY, Superior, Wis./Superior HS) combined to pitch the next three innings, allowing three and five runs, respectively. Luke Johnson (SR, Northfield, Minn./Northfield HS) pitched the sixth, allowing five one hit and one run with two strikeouts. Piggott would be the pitcher of record if the score were to hold.
• Weiss is currently 3-for-4 in the game while Salz, Marshall, Tomony, Skogrand, and Jenkins are all 2-for-4.

FOR THE FOES
• Designated hitter Sam Lavin went 2-for-2 at the plate with three runs batted in in game one while Evan Hammonds was 3-for-5 with one RBI.

UP NEXT
• The Auggies will travel back to Northfield on Friday (4/21) to complete game two with St. Olaf staring at 4 pm before hosting Hamline University on Saturday (4/22) in a MIAC doubleheader starting at 1 pm.
