MINNEAPOLIS – The Augsburg University baseball team hosted Hamline University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader on a chilly Sunday afternoon, splitting with the Pipers with a 2-1 win in game one and an 8-1 loss in game two.

GAME ONE RECAP
• Facing a tough situation with the bases loaded in the top of the second, Augsburg pitcher
Myer Schmitz (SO, Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park HS) pitched himself out of the jam with a double play to end the scoring threat and keep the game scoreless. The Pipers managed to break the scoreless tie an inning later with an RBI single to center field to take a 1-0 lead.
• Following a scoreless frame in the fourth,
Brandon Lockhart (SO, Oakdale, Minn./Tartan HS) tied the game at 1-1 with an RBI single to center that scored
Adam Marshall (SO, Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) after Marshall reached with a double. Just three at bats later,
Michael Weiss (SR, Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar HS) gave the Auggies a 2-1 lead with an RBI single through the left side to score Lockhart.
• Schmitz had a fantastic outing, logging his second complete game of the season with just five hits and one run allowed and two strikeouts in seven full innings.
• Lockhart and
Ty Gage (JR, Eagan, Minn./Eagan HS) each finished the game 1-for-2 while
Clint Mattson (SR, North Branch, Minn./North Branch HS), Weiss, and Marshall were each 1-for-3.
GAME TWO RECAP
• The Auggies struck first in the bottom of the first inning when
Steven Salz (SR, Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS) singled up the middle to score Weiss, but that proved to be all the scoring they could find for the remainder of the game.
• The Pipers tied the game with a run in the second and took the lead with a run in the sixth before blowing the game open with a five-run eighth and adding one final run in the ninth to make it 8-1.
• Augsburg had plenty of scoring chances throughout the game, stranding a total of 10 runners on base.

Austin Lang (FY, Anoka, Minn./Anoka HS) had a quality start on the mound, striking out six Pipers while allowing just four its and two runs in six innings of work.
Jake Skogrand (SO, Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee HS) pitched the following two innings, giving up five hits and five runs, though none were earned.
Jacob Henry (FY, Stacy, Minn./Forest Lake HS) recorded the final three outs for Augsburg, allowing two hits and a run.
• Lockhart and
Carson Tomony (SR, Madison, Wis./Madison East HS) each had multi-hit games, going 2-for-3 and 2-for-4, respectively.
FOR THE FOES
• Matt Rusch went 3-for-8 at the plate on the day for Hamline with all three hits coming in game two.
