MENOMONIE, Wis. – The Augsburg University baseball team crossed the border to Wisconsin for a single nonconference game against the University of Wisconsin-Stout on Thursday afternoon, falling 14-4 to the Blue Devils in seven innings.
THE BASICS
SCORE: UW-Stout 14, Augsburg 4
LOCATION: Menomonie, Wis.
RECORDS: Augsburg 8-22 overall, UW-Stout 15-18 overall
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Auggies were the first team on the board with a run in the first inning off an RBI double by
Steven Salz (SR, Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove SH) that plated
Connor Stoik (SR, Eau Claire, Wis./Eau Claire Memorial HS).
• The Blue Devils would go on to score two in the second and four in the fourth to take a 6-1 lead through four innings of play.
• The Auggies got one back in the fifth when
Joe Peterson (FY, Victoria, Minn./Chanhassen HS) hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score
Clint Mattson (SR, North Branch, Minn./North Branch HS) for the first RBI of his career.
• After Stout added two in the fifth and six more in the sixth to take a 14-2 lead,
Jimmy Hemera (SO, Christchurch, New Zealand/Hillmorton HS) hit a bases-loaded single to center field to score both Peterson and
Drew Jenkins (FY, Farmington, Minn./Randolph HS). That was all the offense the Auggies could manage as the Blue Devils recorded the final out in the seventh to win the game via the 10-run rule.
•
Alex Hinz (SR, Maplewood, Minn./Mounds Park Academy) made the start on the mound, allowing five hits and six runs with three strikeouts in 3.1 innings of work.
Owen Bernards (JR, St. Paul, Minn./Central HS) pitched the final 2.2 innings of relief, giving up six hits and eight runs with three strikeouts.
• Stoik was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate in the game with a stolen base and a run scored.
