MINNEAPOLIS --
Kebba Janneh (JR, Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS) scored his seventh and eighth goals of the 2023 campaign, lifting the Augsburg University men's soccer team to a 3-1 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory over Saint Mary's University on Saturday evening.
THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Augsburg 3, Saint Mary's 1
LOCATION: Edor Nelson Field, Minneapolis
RECORDS: Augsburg 5-0-1 overall (2-0-0 MIAC), Saint Mary's 3-2-1 overall (0-1-0 MIAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Janneh claimed his third multi-goal game of the season, giving him a team- and MIAC-leading eight goals and 20 points. No other player in the MIAC has more than five goals or 11 points at this point in the season.
• Janneh scored his first goal in the 12th minute, scoring on a rebound of his own point-blank shot off a feed from the right side of the net by
Mitchel Munzing (SO, Portland, Ore./Grant HS). His second goal came 15 seconds into the second half on a penalty kick, after
Mizael Harris (SO, Portland, Ore./La Salle Catholic College Prep HS) was taken down in the 18-yard box on a drive off the second-half kickoff.
•
Jakob Mohrlok (JR, Stuttgart, Germany/Schoenbuch Gymnasium) scored for the Auggies in the 33rd minute, taking a free kick feed from Harris and sliding a shot to the low right corner of the net. The assist was Harris' MIAC-leading eighth of the season.
• The Auggies outshot the Cardinals by a 15-10 margin, including a 10-4 advantage in the second half. Augsburg held a 60-to-40-percent advantage in possession, especially in the second half, as the Auggies controlled the ball and held onto the lead.
• Augsburg's defensive set of Mohrlok,
Drew Collins (SR, Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park HS),
Ceazar Daniell (SO, Portland, Ore./Cleveland HS) and
Jonathan Ongeri-Kamara (SR, Richfield, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS) was strong, all playing the full 90 minutes while allowing just three Saint Mary's shots on-goal in the game.
•
Oscar Herrera (SR, Madison, Wis./Madison West HS) had two saves in the win.
FOR THE FOES
• Daniel Sessler had six saves in goal for the Cardinals.
• Jack Hurley scored his second goal of the season for Saint Mary's in the 83rd minute on a penalty kick.
QUOTES FROM AUGSBURG HEAD COACH GREG HOLKER
• "It wasn't our best performance, for sure, but it was enough to gain valuable points. We started strong, and our movement in attack was effective in creating the opportunities we wanted. Kebba's first goal was a byproduct of a lot of subtle actions, and I was very pleased with that portion of the game. I think when Mitch left the game, we changed a bit and that's something we have to work out internally."
• "In the second half, to score so quickly was both a blessing and a curse. It secured the result, but we played really boring and the game just fizzled out. Credit to Saint Mary's for battling through the final whistle, for sure. They were a handful in several moments and there is a strong spirit in the group."
• "We are glad to have the points, but I know the team is not happy with the performance and we clearly have a lot of work to do as we head into our next MIAC game at Saint John's. Fortunately, we have some time with two non-conference games next week to help us get better."
UP NEXT
• Augsburg travels to face Wisconsin-Superior in a nonconference game on Wednesday (9/20) at 7 p.m.
