MINNEAPOLIS --
Tyrone Wilson (JR, Ellendale, Minn./New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva HS) tied an Augsburg University football single-game record with four touchdown catches, including the go-ahead score on a dramatic catch in overtime, as the Auggies claimed a 35-34 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory over previously unbeaten St. Olaf College on Saturday afternoon at Edor Nelson Field.
THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Augsburg 35, St. Olaf 34 (OT)
LOCATION: Edor Nelson Field, Minneapolis
RECORDS: Augsburg 3-4 overall (2-3 MIAC), St. Olaf 6-1 overall (4-1 MIAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Wilson caught eight passes for 113 yards and four touchdowns, tying a single-game school record for receiving scores, set six times previously in school history. Augsburg players have scored four touchdowns (rushing or receiving) in a game 15 previous times in school history. He also rushed four times for 30 yards on direct snap plays.
• Tied 28-28 going into overtime, the Auggies were halted in their first three plays, as the blitzing Ole defense forced three incompletions by quarterback
Ryan Harvey (JR, Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS). But on fourth down and 10 from the 25, Harvey sent a floating pass to the back of the end zone, and Wilson leaped to catch it over two defenders. The extra point was good by
Nathan Wangensteen (JR, Chisholm, Minn./Chisholm HS), giving the Auggies a 35-28 advantage.
• The Oles scored on their first play of overtime, as Theo Doran completed a 25-yard touchdown pass to Braden Metz. The Oles elected to go for the two-point conversion and the victory, and a pass from Doran was caught by Derek Hanson, but out of bounds, securing the victory for the Auggies.
• The overtime -- Augsburg's first since back-to-back overtime games to close out the 2014 season -- capped a wild showcase on offense by both teams. The two teams combined for 794 yards of total offense -- 407 yards on 73 plays (5.6 yards per-play) by the Auggies, 387 yards on 63 plays (6.1 yards per-play) for the Oles.
• Auggie quarterback Harvey completed 24-of-43 passes for 270 yards and five touchdowns against one interception, while St. Olaf quarterback Doran completed 21-of-36 passes for 289 yards and three touchdowns against two interceptions.
• Wilson caught three touchdown passes in the first half for the Auggies, as Augsburg built a 21-7 advantage.
CJ Ritchie (SO, Blaine, Minn./Irondale HS) caught the other Auggie touchdown pass, a 26-yarder in the second quarter.
•
Will Smith (SO, Minneapolis, Minn./North HS) rushed 18 times for a season-high 112 yards, while catching seven passes for 60 yards.
• Defensively,
Rio Starr (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) led the way with 12 tackles (seven solo), including 2.5 tackles for-loss.
Marcus Kimbrough (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest HS) and
Jax Bokman (JR, Faribault, Minn./Bethlehem Academy HS) had interceptions for the Auggies.
