Auggie men draw with No. 3-ranked Gusties

MINNEAPOLIS -- Giving a solid effort on the road, the Augsburg University men's soccer team scored a 0-0 draw with Gustavus Adolphus College, the No. 3-ranked team nationally, in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match on Saturday afternoon.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Augsburg 0, Gustavus 0
LOCATION: Gustie Soccer Field, St. Peter, Minn.
RECORDS: Augsburg 8-2-3 overall (2-0-2 MIAC), Gustavus 9-0-2 overall (4-0-1 MIAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
• The game proved to be an even-matched, defensive struggle, compounded for the Auggies after two starters left the game with injuries in the first half. The Gusties, ranked No. 3 in the latest United Soccer Coaches Division III national poll, outshot the Auggies by a 12-8 margin, but the two teams could combine for just one shot on-target, by the Gusties. Augsburg held a 52-to-48-percent possession advantage in the game.
• Defenders Jakob Mohrlok (SR, Stuttgart, Germany/Schonbuch Gymnasium) and Zachariah Sherian (SO, Blaine, Minn./Blaine HS) played the full 90 minutes, along with midfielders Jeffrey Richter (JR, Portland, Ore./La Salle Catholic College Prep HS) and Joseph Swallen (SO, Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS). Forward Mizael Harris (JR, Happy Valley, Ore./La Salle Catholic College Prep HS) saw 82 minutes of game action.
Owen Salzwedel (SO, St. Anthony Village, Minn./St. Anthony Village HS) had two of Augsburg's eight shots in the game.
Frankie Pinto (FY, Chicago, Ill./Maine South HS) had one save in goal for his third shutout of the season.

FOR THE FOES
• Joe Flory had three shots, with the lone shot on-goal, for Gustavus.
• Brian Brown, Owen Johnson and Diego Paulin had two shots each.

QUOTES FROM AUGSBURG HEAD COACH GREG HOLKER
• "That was a fair result against a very good and very competitive team. It was more significant because we had injuries to Mitchel Munzing and Ceazar Daniell early in the game, and Jacob Thao missed the game due to illness. Our bench came through and performed admirably and that brought us all confidence."
• "It was our first clean sheet in what seems like forever. We had been silly in conceding goals the five previous matches, so locking it down today was even more important to us."
• "We had much better performances from our players than we did against Saint John's. Joseph Swallen was great once again, and Christopher Plaza and Owen Salzwedel were very strong. Anson Karn bounced back to put in an outstanding effort. He was so fun to watch."
• "Now it's off to the Twin Cities Marathon tomorrow morning to support the runners at mile marker 19!"

UP NEXT
• Augsburg hosts Concordia-Moorhead in a Homecoming matchup next Saturday (10/12) at 7 p.m. at Edor Nelson Field.
