MINNEAPOLIS --
Mizael Harris (JR, Happy Valley, Ore./La Salle Catholic College Prep HS) scored the game-winning goal with 4:19 left in the second overtime, sending the Augsburg University men's soccer team to the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference postseason playoff semifinals with a 1-0 quarterfinal triumph over Macalester College on Saturday evening.
THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Augsburg 2, Macalester 1
LOCATION: Macalester Stadium, St. Paul, Minn.
RECORDS: Augsburg 12-3-5 overall, Macalester 12-6-0 overall
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The game-winner came in the 106th minute.
Remus Repcak (SO, Tualatin, Ore./Tualatin HS) sent the ball from the right edge of the 18 yard box through a teammate's legs to
Joseph Swallen (SO, Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) at the top of the box, who slammed a shot that was saved by the Macalester goalkeeper. Harris pounced on the rebound and sent a right-footed shot to the top right corner of the net for his seventh goal of the season.
• The two teams played three days before, as Augsburg claimed a 2-1, come-from-behind win, and Monday's rematch proved to be another thriller from start to finish. The teams battled for possession throughout, as the Auggies held a narrow 52-to-48-percent possession advantage, and outshot the Scots by a 14-12 margin. However, Augsburg's defense protected the back third well, as the Scots managed just one shot on-goal in the game. Auggie defenders
Jakob Mohrlok (SR, Stuttgart, Germany/Schonbuch Gymnasium),
Jeffrey Richter (JR, Portland, Ore./La Salle Catholic College Prep HS) and
Zachariah Sherian (SO, Blaine, Minn./Blaine HS) played the full 106 minutes for the Auggies.
• Harris, who played 101 minutes, had four shots in the game, including three on-target, while Swallen had three shots in 102 minutes.
• Augsburg goalkeeper
Frankie Pinto (FY, Chicago, Ill./Maine South HS) had to make just one save in the first half to record his fourth shutout of the season.
FOR THE FOES
• Macalester goalkeeper Sam Price had nine saves.
• Hans Haenicke had five shots in the game, while Kasdan Blattman had three saves.
QUOTES FROM AUGSBURG HEAD COACH GREG HOLKER
• "That is such a talented and classy Macalester team. I think they are one of the best in the region, and they're young and have so many good characteristics. For us to get by them twice in four days is beyond words, and says a lot about our group and our quality as well."
• "The game was pretty even, if not tilted in their favor in the first half, but we were able to get ourselves in better shape in the second half, and it showed as we created more chances and had them pushed back a lot of the time. Their counters are a handful to deal with, and that was always on our mind, but I think Jakob and Jeffrey dealt with it well. They got a lot of help from
Zachariah Sherian -- who I thought was the man of the match."
• "In the final moment, the work from Remus on the right edge to cut that ball back for Joey was tremendous, and Joey did the right thing before Miz smashed home the winner. What an incredible game and I think a just result, based on how we performed in the last 60 minutes."
