Auggies upset by Oles in MIAC semifinals

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Augsburg University men's hockey team's season came to an end in upset fashion on Saturday, as No. 5-seed St. Olaf College claimed a 4-0 victory over the top-seeded Auggies in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Playoff semifinal game on Saturday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• St. Olaf was outshot by a 32-22 margin, but capitalized on its opportunities, scoring a goal in the first period, a pair of goals in a 2:53 span in the second period, and an empty-net goal with 1:12 left to advance to the conference playoff championship game, snapping Augsburg's seven-game (6-0-1) unbeaten streak.
Daniel Chladek (SR, Anaheim, Calif./Canyon HS) and Dylan Schneider (JR, Rochester, Minn./Shattuck-St. Mary's HS) had five shots on-goal each for Augsburg, while Logan Kons (SR, Niles, Ill./Niles West HS) had four shots.
• Kons and Fritz Belisle (SR, Red Wing, Minn./Red Wing HS) had two blocked shots each in the game.
• Goalie Samuel Vyletelka (JR, Zilina, Slovakia/Grammar School of St. Francis of Assisi) had 18 saves.

• The game marked the final collegiate contest for seven Auggie seniors -- Belisle, Chladek, Kons, Tommy Carls (SR, Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS), Konnor Carlson (SR, Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley HS), Erik Palmqvist (SR, Linkoping, Sweden/Anderstorpsgymnasiet), Vincent Weis (SR, Madison, Wis./Madison Edgewood HS) and Kyler Yeo (SR, Woodbury, Minn./Hill-Murray HS).
• Under first-year head coach Garrett Hendrickson, Augsburg claimed its 12th MIAC regular-season championship in school history in the 2023-24 campaign, and reached the MIAC playoffs for the ninth full season in a row.

FOR THE FOES
• Gunnar Johnson, Ben Luscko, Sean Walsh and Eric Brown all scored goals for St. Olaf.
• Thomas Lalonde had 32 saves in goal for the shutout win for the Oles.
