Herrera signs pro soccer contract with MNUFC2

PAUL, Minn. -- Augsburg University men's soccer alumnus Oscar Herrera '24 (Madison, Wis./Madison East HS) has signed a professional contract for the remainder of the 2024 season with the Minnesota United FC 2 squad, and is expected to suit up as a reserve goalkeeper for the main Minnesota United FC club for its Major League Soccer game against Vancouver on Wednesday (7/3) at Allianz Field.
 
MNUFC2 is the reserve club for Minnesota United FC, and plays in the MLS NEXT Pro league, in the third tier of the United States Soccer Federation's professional soccer structure. MNUFC2 plays its home games at the National Sports Center Stadium in Blaine, Minn. By also signing a short-term agreement with the main club, Minnesota United FC, Herrera is expected to suit up for MNUFC as a backup goalkeeper in the Loons' game against Vancouver on Wednesday.
 
MNUFC2 is currently 4-9-0 with 12 points in MLS Next Pro, and has a game at North Texas on Wednesday. The squad's next home game is on Thursday, July 18 at 6 p.m., hosting Austin (Texas) in Blaine.
 
A four-year starter in goal at Augsburg, Herrera played in 54 games in his Auggie career, going 27-15-2 with a 1.19 goals against-average, 182 saves (.740 save percentage) and 16 shutouts. His 27 career wins are fourth-most in school history, with his GAA tied for sixth-best and 16 shutouts tied for fourth-most.
 
Herrera earned All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and United Soccer Coaches All-Region first-team honors in 2021, when he went 12-6-1 (tying Augsburg's single-season school record for wins) with five shutouts and a 1.11 GAA, leading the Auggies to an MIAC postseason playoff berth. He went 7-3-5 with six shutouts and a 1.00 GAA in 2022, and 7-3-6 with four shutouts and a 1.25 GAA for the Auggies' 2023 MIAC playoff squad.
 
Herrera has played with local club Minneapolis City FC (which plays its home games at Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field) and has trained with Forward Madison (Wis.) since ending his collegiate career.
