MINNEAPOLIS -- As part of Augsburg University's Homecoming week, nine alumni will be inducted into the university's Athletic Hall of Fame, and three others will be honored with special awards, during the 2024 Augsburg Athletic Hall of Fame Ceremony, to be held on Thursday, Oct. 10 at the Foss Chapel.
Inductees into the 51st class of the Athletic Hall of Fame are:

Mathew Shannon '04 (Track & Field/Football/Basketball) and
Todd Tourand '99 (Golf). In addition, Augsburg women's hockey alum
Whitney Restemayer '10 will receive the Augsburg Excellence in Coaching Award, Augsburg multi-sport alum
Stan Nelson '43 will receive the Legend of Augsburg Athletics Award, and Director of Sports Medicine/Head Athletic Trainer
Missy Strauch will receive the Augsburg Distinguished Athletic Service Award.
The nine inductees bring the total number of Athletic Hall of Fame members to 363, along with one team. In addition, 15 individuals have been honored with the department's Distinguished Athletic Service Award, 11 individuals have earned the department's Excellence in Coaching Award, and three individuals have earned the Legend of Augsburg Athletics Award.

1996 Augsburg Men's Honor Athlete … Two-time All-American for Auggies, finishing eighth nationally at 158 pounds in 1994 and third in 1996 at 167 … NWCA Scholar All- American in 1995 … MIAC champion in 1996 (177) and 1997 (167) … Went 18-9 in 1993-94, 20-4 in 1994-95 and 31-3 in 1995-96 for 69-16 Auggie career record … Member of 1995 Division III national title team, while teams placed second in 1996 and fourth in 1994 … Also played football in 1994, starting running back … Transferred to Augsburg from Minnesota … Served as student assistant coach in 1996-97.

All-MIAC forward in 1978-79, All-MIAC Honorable Mention in 1979-80 and 1980-81 … Member of teams that won NAIA national titles in 1978 and 1981 and MIAC titles all four years … Finished career with 79 goals and 71 assists for 150 points in 101 career games … Currently stands 5th in school history in career goals and 9th in career points … Scored 12 goals with 19 assists for 31 points in 1977- 78 … 22 goals with 16 assists for 38 points in 1978-79, 24 goals and 19 assists for 43 points in 1979-80 and 21 goals and 17 assists for 38 points in 1980-81 … 49 goals with 36 assists for 85 points in 54 MIAC games.

Henry Gerten '98 (Wrestling)
Inducted into NWCA D-III Hall of Fame in 2016 … Competed three years at Augsburg after transferring from D-I Wisconsin … Two-time NCAA D-III national champion at 118 pounds (1997 and 1998), the fourth Auggie to win multiple national titles in program history … Three-time All-American, also finishing fourth at 118 in 1996 … Was 104- 7 in his three seasons at Augsburg … Won MIAC titles at 118 in 1996, 1997 and 1998 … Was first-ever Auggie to complete a season unbeaten, when he went 44-0 in 1996-97, part of a 64-match winning streak … Went 32-2 in 1997-98 and 28-5 in 1995-96 … Won titles at all 16 tournaments entered during his junior and senior seasons … Named Midwest Sports Channel Sports Salute Division III Athlete of the Year in 1998 … Team co-captain in 1996-97 and 1997-98 … Augsburg co-Senior Honor Athlete in 1998 … NCAA Today's Top VIII honoree (only Division III athlete named to squad) in 1998 … Inducted into NWCA Division III Hall of Fame in 2016 … NWCA D-III Scholar All-American in 1997 and 1998 … Member of Augsburg teams that won D-III national titles in 1997 and 1998, second in 1996.

Tiffany (Magnuson) Urseth '09 (Hockey/Softball)

All-MIAC with top-10 conference meet finishes in 1995, 1996, 1997 and 1998 (one of only 4 men's golf athletes in Augsburg history to earn All-MIAC honors all four years), earning MIAC medalist honors with 71-79--150 effort in 1998 league championships … Finished 2nd in MIAC meet in 1995, 3rd in 1996 and 7th in 1997 … Member of Auggie teams that competed at NCAA tournaments in both 1996 and 1997 … Had 4-round total of 316 in 1996 NCAA meet (t-81st) and 329 in 1997 (t-87th) … Named GCAA District V Freshman of the Year in 1996 … Team's leading scorer in 1997-98 (77.2 stroke average) and had career-best 76.4 average in 1998-99 … In career (89 rounds), finished with 77.21 stroke average, 10th-best average in modern history of program (since 1994-95). |

Whitney Restemayer '10 (Hockey)
First woman to coach a state high school hockey championship team in Minnesota history, when she coached the Thief River Falls High School girls' hockey team to the 2015 Class A state championship … Named 2015 Class A State Coach of the Year honoree … Coached at Moorhead HS in 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons … Currently serves as girls' JV head coach at Edina HS … Native of Bemidji, Minn., played hockey (4 years) and softball (2 years) at Augsburg … As a defender in hockey, played in 96 career games, scoring 9 goals with 14 assists for 23 career points, with 4 power-play goals … As an outfielder in softball in 2007 and 2008, played in 75 games (72 starts), hitting .244 (51-of-209) with 26 runs scored, 15 doubles, 1 triple, 3 home runs, 12 RBI, 15 stolen bases, .368 slugging percentage and .301 on-base percentage. |

Stan Nelson '43 (Baseball/Basketball/Football/Golf)
Inducted into Augsburg Athletic Hall of Fame in 1977 … Earned 12 varsity letters in football, basketball, baseball and golf during his Augsburg days, All-MIAC and team captain in football in 1942 … After graduating from Augsburg, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy as an officer (Lieutenant Junior Grade) during World War II, participating in invasion of Normandy and the Pacific theater … After WWII, he earned his master's degree from the University of Minnesota in 1951, then served as a coach for seven years at Zumbrota and Farmington, then was named football coach at Anoka HS in 1953 … From 1953-1979, he went 154-70-8, earning 7 conference championships and the state title in 1964 at Anoka, with a 33-game winning streak across four seasons in the 1960s … MHSCA Coach of the Year in 1964 … Elected into Halls of Fame in several different organizations, including Minnesota Football Coaches Association, Minnesota State High School Coaches Association, Anoka High School and Old Timers Football Coaches … Received Minnesota High School Athletic Directors Distinguished Alumni Award in 2008 … Received Bud Grant Distinguished Minnesotan Award from National Football Foundation in 2016 … Auditorium at Anoka's Haven For Heroes veterans home was named for him in 2019 … Competed in Minnesota Senior Olympics, earning a gold medal in golf in 2014 at age 94, qualifying for the National Senior State Games, where he placed third … Married to Marcella Nelson for 65 years (Marcella passed away in 2011) … Children are Cheryl (Richard King), Steve (Angela Nelson), and Dave (Maureen Nelson), 10 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren. |
2024 AUGSBURG DISTINGUISHED ATHLETIC SERVICE AWARD
Missy Strauch (Director of Sports Medicine/Head Athletic Trainer)
Serving as Director of Sports Medicine at Augsburg since 1998, Missy Strauch (North Dakota State '89) has earned a well-deserved reputation as one of the most respected sports medicine professionals in the MIAC and in all of NCAA Division III athletics. Strauch is Augsburg's Athletics Heath Care Administrator and is the primary certified athletic trainer for the Augsburg football and men's hockey teams, in addition to supervising the sports medicine program for all 22 Augsburg varsity athletic teams.
In 2016, Strauch received the Fred Zamberletti Award from the Minnesota Chapter of the National Football Federation at the ninth annual Minnesota Football Awards, honoring her outstanding service to the Augsburg athletic community. Before earning the Fred Zamberletti Award, Strauch received a 25-year award from the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) in 2014, and was awarded the Outstanding Staff Award by Augsburg in 2015. In addition, she has served as the president of the Minnesota Athletic Trainers Association.
Outside of Augsburg, Strauch works with the NFL and the Big Ten in the independent concussion spotter programs. She has provided athletic training services for the Special Olympics, the 1992 cycling Olympic Trials and the Paralympic games in Atlanta in 1996.
Strauch earned her bachelor's degree in athletic training from North Dakota State and her master's degree in human performance from Wisconsin-La Crosse in 1994. Prior to coming to Augsburg, Strauch served as an athletic trainer at Orono HS (Long Lake, Minn., 1989-92), Augustana College (Ill., 1994-97) and at the University of Minnesota (1997-98). Strauch is actively involved with the MIAC and the College Athletic Trainers' Society. |
