MINNEAPOLIS -- Held to just 165 yards of total offense, the Augsburg University football team was shut out 28-0 by Gustavus Adolphus College in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon at Edor Nelson Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• With just 29 rushing yards and 136 passing yards, the Auggies were held to a 2.5 yards-per-play average on its 66 offensive plays. Augsburg entered the Gustavus "red zone" (inside the 20-yard line) just twice in the contest, and had three drives end on interceptions. Gustavus gained 358 yards (158 rushing, 200 passing) in the game, an average of 6.3 yards per-play on its 57 plays.
• Augsburg was led defensively by
Rio Starr (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) and
Dylan Owens (JR, Andover, Minn./Andover HS), who had 10 tackles each. Starr had six solo tackles, and Owens had three solo tackles, with a sack.

Hamsa Kahin (SR, Eden Prairie, Minn./Edina HS) had seven tackles (three solo) with a half-sack and tackle for-loss, and
Tayvion Gardner (JR, Apple Valley, Minn./Apple Valley HS) had a sack.

Marcus Freeman (JR, Brooklyn Park, Minn./Park Center HS) completed 13-of-28 passes for 129 yards, with
Tyrique Givance (SR, Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park HS) catching seven passes for 67 yards and
Tyrone Wilson (JR, Ellendale, Minn./New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva HS) had six catches for 60 yards.

Will Smith (SO, Minneapolis, Minn./North HS) rushed 16 times for 43 yards.
• Defensive lineman Connor Elliott (JR, Apple Valley, Minn./Apple Valley HS) had a 32-yard rush on a fake punt in the second quarter.
FOR THE FOES
• De'Marion brown rushed 21 times for 109 yards and three touchdowns -- a one-yarder in the first quarter a 38-yarder in the third quarter and a six-yarder in the fourth quarter. River Wood rushed eight times for 69 yards and a 41-yard touchdown.
• George Sandven completed 15-of-16 passes for 196 yards, and Jake Breitbach caught seven passes for 131 yards.
• Tanner Domschot, Jack Klug and Myshawn King had six tackles each, with King contributing 1.5 sacks.
