Auggies pick up 14th victory of season

DULUTH, Minn. -- Second-half goals from Mitchel Munzing (SR, Portland, Ore./Grant HS) and Christopher Plaza Alvarado (SO, New Brighton, Minn./St. Anthony Village HS) lifted the No. 8-ranked Augsburg University men's soccer team to a 2-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory over the College of St. Scholastica on Saturday afternoon.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Augsburg 2, St. Scholastica 0
LOCATION: Kenny Harkins Field, Duluth, Minn.
RECORDS: Augsburg 14-1-1 overall (5-1-1 MIAC), St. Scholastica 2-10-4 overall (2-4-1 MIAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Munzing scored his seventh goal of the season in the 66th minute, finishing a break on a left-footed one-timer from a feed from the left wing by Ceazar Daniell (SR, Portland, Ore./Cleveland HS).
• Plaza Alvarado scored his sixth goal of the season in the 82nd minute, scoring on a scramble in front after he blocked the St. Scholastica goalkeeper's punch-out of a service from the right side by Diego Veit (SR, Vina Del Mar, Chile/Centro Educacional de Adultos Rafael Sotomayor), then tapping the ball in for the score.
• Augsburg outshot St. Scholastica by a 23-10 margin in the game, including a 14-5 advantage in the second half. The Auggies had 11 shots on-goal compared to the Saints' three.
• Carver Tierney (SR, Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo HS) had 10 shots in the game, while Asher Johnson (JR, Waconia, Minn./Waconia HS) had four shots.
• Goalkeeper Christian Hodges (FY, New Albany, Ohio/Tree of Life Christian School) picked up his 10th shutout win of the season, and Augsburg's 11th as a team, with three saves.

QUOTES FROM AUGSBURG COACH GREG HOLKER
• "St. Scholastica are a formidable side -- their record doesn't reflect it, but they are solid. They had a plan, and it took us 30 minutes or so to work around it. After that, it was a matter of time before we scored. I know Carver feels a little bummed because he could have put away 4-5, but he's gonna keep at it, no doubt. They will come. His goal creation number is insane these past two games."
• "Ceazar had a tough go for a lot of the game, but in the second half he finally started getting behind, and the ball he whipped in for Mitchell's goal was so good! Similarly, Diego snapped a great ball in that forced their GK into a mess of bodies and it fell to Plaza to poke away and seal the win."
• "Jeffrey Richter was solid in the back, managing the team and keeping them in front of us. When Cole Pettit went down, Anson Karn came on and was outstanding. That is a reflection of his recent training habits. That's a massive bonus for the team to have him getting into form at this stage of the season. Jacob Thao should also be mentioned, as he was a massive influence in the game when he was out there, especially in the second half. His work was so important to the team's success."
• "Next week is a big week for us, hosting both Northfield schools. That will clarify a lot in the MIAC playoff race."

FOR THE FOES
• Ben Hallberg had seven saves in goal for St. Scholastica.
