Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Tierney scores twice, #7 Auggies draw #4 Oles

MINNEAPOLIS -- Carver Tierney (SR, Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo HS) scored two goals and set a new single-season goal-scoring record for the No. 7-ranked Augsburg University men's soccer team, but No. 4-ranked St. Olaf College tied the game with two goals in the final 3:01 of play, in a 2-2 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference decision on Saturday evening.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Augsburg 2, St. Olaf 2
LOCATION: Edor Nelson Field, Minneapolis
RECORDS: Augsburg 15-1-2 overall (6-1-2 MIAC), St. Olaf 14-1-3 overall (9-0-1 MIAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Tierney opened the scoring in the 36th minute, as he collected a service from the left wing by Ceazar Daniell (SR, Portland, Ore./Cleveland HS) in the center of the 18-yard box, spun to his right and directed a low line drive to the right corner of the goal. Diego Veit (SR, Vina Del Mar, Chile/Centro Educacional de Adultos Rafael Sotomayor) received the second assist.
• Tierney's second goal of the game, and his record-breaking 16th of the season, came in the 57th minute, as he blasted a left-footed shot from the top of the 18-yard box, after a service was deflected by an Ole defender and teammate Mitchel Munzing (SR, Portland, Ore./Grant HS).
• The Oles scored two goals in a 1:52 span late in the contest to tie the game. The first came on a scramble in front off a corner kick with 3:01 left, and the second came on a one-timer off a service from the right wing with 1:09 remaining.
• St. Olaf outshot the Auggies by a 16-13 margin and held a 57-to-43-percent possession advantage in the game.
• Viet had four shots in the game, while Tierney had three shots, all on-target.
Christian Hodges (FY, New Albany, Ohio/Tree of Life Christian School) had five saves in goal.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• Recording his fourth multi-goal game of the season and second in a row, Tierney now has 16 goals and five assists for 37 points, tied for the MIAC's overall lead in goals and second in points.
• Tierney broke Augsburg's single-season goal-scoring record of 15, set by Kebba Janneh in 2023. His 37 points are now second-most in a single season in school history, behind the 37 (13 goals, 13 assists) by Darcy Debing in 1976.
• The game marked the final regular-season home appearance for seven Auggie seniors -- Tierney, Daniell, Munzing, Veit, Mizael Harris (SR, Happy Valley, Ore./La Salle Catholic College Prep HS), Muhamed Keita (SR, Farato, Gambia/Nusurat Senior HS) and Jeffrey Richter (SR, Portland, Ore./La Salle Catholic College Prep HS).

QUOTES FROM AUGSBURG COACH GREG HOLKER
• "I don't know if you will find a better game to watch than that one -- two of the best teams in the country in a game that ebbed and flowed and had all the fireworks the fans could ask for. Unfortunately, we didn't score the chances early in the second half that were really clean, we had a free kick taken before the whistle that was in the top corner, and we allowed St. Olaf to get too close to our goal in the final moments with purely chaotic play. St. Olaf knows how to close out games and make something out of nothing, and they did it to us tonight. It felt like a loss -- and that's OK for us to feel that way. We also have to get better at closing the door on any opponent in the closing minutes of a game, especially when two goals up.
• "Carver Tierney missed the last two days of training dealing with an illness, and was not fully healthy tonight. Yet he stepped out and scored two goals to become the single-season record holder for goals with 16, which ties him for the MIAC lead as well. His first goal was just incredible -- he is such a talent, one of the best players in the country in my opinion."
• "Muhammed Keita was outstanding tonight holding play up for us, and for giving Diego and Carver valuable rest. He showed real maturity, as he has all season long. Anson Karn did well coming in for an injured Cole Pettit, and his performance is a reflection of his training habits the past few weeks. He's been great."
• "Mitchell Munzing is just an incredible talent, and he created so many chances for us tonight. He's been our engine in recent weeks, and I expect his point production to rise up a bit because of that as we move into the postseason."
• "With one game to play, we need some help from Bethel on Friday to get a bye and a home semifinal. Otherwise, we will likely host Saint John's a week from Monday and have to go on the road for the rest of the MIAC Playoffs, should we advance."

FOR THE FOES
• Caspar Olseth scored in the 87th minute, and Ryan Bechtel scored in the 89th minute for St. Olaf.
• Jack Hobday had four saves in 87 minutes in goal, with Beckett Carlson playing the final 3:01.

UP NEXT
• Augsburg finishes the regular season next Saturday (11/1) at 1 p.m. with an MIAC game at Concordia-Moorhead. With 20 league points, Augsburg sits in third place in the MIAC standings, behind conference champion St. Olaf (28 points) and second-place Macalester (21 points). Macalester hosts fourth-place Bethel (16 points) in its regular-season finale on Friday (10/31).
