ST. PAUL, Minn. --
Diego Veit (SR, Vina Del Mar, Chile/Centro Educacional de Adultos Rafael Sotomayor) claimed his second career multi-goal game, scoring twice in a 2:21 span midway through the second half, as the No. 3-ranked Augsburg University men's soccer team rallied for a 3-1 win over host Macalester College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game on Saturday afternoon.
THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Augsburg 3, Macalester 1
LOCATION: Macalester Stadium, St. Paul, Minn.
RECORDS: Augsburg 11-1-0 overall (3-1-0 MIAC), Macalester 7-4-0 overall (2-2-0 MIAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Trailing 1-0 after a Macalester goal on a penalty kick in the 29th minute, Augsburg scored three goals in a 13-minute span to secure the victory.
Christopher Plaza Alvarado (SO, New Brighton, Minn./St. Anthony Village HS) tied the game on a penalty kick in the 54th minute, after
Joseph Swallen (JR, Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) was fouled on a drive in the right edge of the 18-yard box.
• Plaza Alvarado then assisted on Veit's first goal, as his shot from the top the penalty box glanced off a Macalester defender to a wide open Veit on the right wing. Veit then slammed a left-footed shot to the top left corner of the net.
• Veit's second goal came in the 69th minute, as his corner kick from the right side -- one of six corner kicks for the Auggies in the game -- sailed over the Scots' goalkeeper and to the upper left corner of the net.
• Augsburg outshot Macalester by a 14-10 margin in the game, with seven shots on-goal to the Scots' three. Eleven different Auggies had shots in the game.
•
Christian Hodges (FY, New Albany, Ohio/Tree of Life Christian School) had two saves in goal for the Augies.
QUOTES FROM AUGSBURG COACH GREG HOLKER
• "We weren't particularly effective in the first half overall, but we did start strong on the ball and created one chance from a corner kick that Plaza hit right into their GK. As the half wore on, Macalester became more imposing and their counter attacks were tough to handle. Hodges made a top class save ahead of the penalty to keep us alive. I will have to see the penalty again, because Christian claims to have touched the ball before the decision was made. Nonetheless, Kasden took the penalty well and we were in the week's familiar territory being down at halftime."
• "In the second half, it was a matter of time before we were going to break them down, and
Joseph Swallen did exactly what was needed by driving on the dribble into the box and using his body so well to draw a penalty in our favor. Plaza stepped up and pushed it through the hands of their GK -- not the best penalty, but it was enough."
• "Then it became the
Diego Veit show, as he calmly took a rebound from a Plaza shot and buried it in the back of the net. Then he bent a corner kick into the back corner for an Olympico goal two minutes later for the brace. At 3-1, we knew it was secure because we were not giving up another goal. We've had enough of that after the Saint John's game."
• "We showed good character bouncing back from our first loss, and overcoming a deficit. That was important for our confidence as we head up to Superior on Tuesday for our final game of a five game road swing, and our last nonconference matchup. Now -- let's celebrate the runners tomorrow at the Twin Cities Marathon Mile Marker 19 on the Franklin Avenue bridge. We hope to see many alumni and families join us in cheering them all on! "
