Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Auggies blank Eagles, advance to Sweet Sixteen

(STORY UPDATED WITH SECTIONAL DESTINATION)

MINNEAPOLIS -- For the second time in school history, the Augsburg University men's soccer team has advanced to the "Sweet Sixteen" round of the NCAA Division III national playoffs, as the No. 2-ranked Auggies shut out Edgewood University 1-0 in a second-round game on Sunday afternoon at Edor Nelson Field.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Augsburg 1, Edgewood (Wis.) 0
LOCATION: Edor Nelson Field, Minneapolis
RECORDS: Augsburg 18-2-2 overall, Edgewood 16-3-2 overall

HOW IT HAPPENED
Mitchel Munzing (SR, Portland, Ore./Grant HS) scored his third goal of the NCAA playoffs and 11th goal of the season just 9:31 into the contest. A throw-in by Remus Repcak (JR, Tualatin, Ore./Tualatin HS) deep in the Edgewood defensive third was headed by a Eagle defender in the 18-yard box, where Carver Tierney (SR, Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo HS) directed it with his heel to Munzing, who circled to the left and fired a shot to the upper right side of the net.
• For the second straight game, Augsburg was outshot by a significant margin, as Edgewood outshot the Auggies by a 26-5 margin and held a 51-to-49-percent possession advantage -- including a 17-2 shots advantage in the second half, as the Eagles mounted numerous attacks to try to tie the game. The Eagles also had nine corner kicks to Augsburg's three. But Augsburg's defense was incredibly stout, limiting the Eagles to just eight shots on-target -- and Auggie goalkeeper Christian Hodges (FY, New Albany, Ohio/Tree of Life Christian School) saved them all for his 13th shutout win of the season, setting a new single-season school record for shutouts. He broke the old mark of 12, set by Pascaul Venter in 2006.
• Hodges' most dramatic save came with 18 minutes left in the contest, as he dove to his left and deflected the ball away from a sharp shot from the top of the 18-yard box.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• Augsburg will return to the NCAA's "Sweet Sixteen" for the first time since its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Division III national tournament in 2008. Making its fourth-ever appearance in the national tournament (2008, 2010, 2018), Augsburg is now 4-3-1 all-time in NCAA playoff competition, all under 22nd-year head coach Greg Holker (212-136-55 career record).

QUOTES FROM AUGSBURG COACH GREG HOLKER
• "We have suffered several times this season -- late goals, set pieces conceded, points dropped, bad luck -- and today we suffered in a different way. Those moments prepared us for this type of moment, and we came through. Edgewood was outstanding, and their quality and their physical presence was so difficult to deal with. On the bench, we kept asking each other, 'Can we survive one more' on every corner kick and long throw-in. And every time, we did. Full credit to the guys for digging in and doing what was necessary to get through this game en route to the Sweet Sixteen for the first time since the great 2008 team."
• "The game was the game -- it was difficult, exciting, fun. The important stuff happened afterwards, it was just overwhelming. To see the alumni representing decades of Augsburg teams come and join us for the postgame celebration was so moving for me, personally. We've worked tirelessly to build something real -- something transformative, and today was a moment of realization that the work has paid off. I am so grateful for all the people who have helped build the program over the years. You all matter to me -- so much. Thank you!"
• "We earned another week together - and whether it's in Chicago or St. Louis, we are grateful to have this opportunity. If we didn't have a dome to set up or a major wrestling event on Saturday, we would have hosted -- but to get this first weekend at home was so incredibly special, and I am happy the group gets to experience different versions of this event. Home is amazing, but traveling together is also powerful and will produce more lifelong memories. For You. For Soccer. For Life."

FOR THE FOES
• Liam Moreira and Riley Kann had four shots each for Edgewood.
• Brandon Kaup and Gabe Young had three shots each, and both had two shots on-goal.
