MINNEAPOLIS -- The only team to beat the Augsburg University men's soccer team this season did it again on Monday, as Saint John's University scored a goal with 4:37 left in regulation to claim a 2-1 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference playoff semifinal victory over the host Auggies.
THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Saint John's 2, Augsburg 1
LOCATION: Edor Nelson Field, Minneapolis
RECORDS: Augsburg 16-2-2 overall, Saint John's 13-4-3 overall
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Trailing 1-0 at halftime, Augsburg attacked in the second half, outshooting the Johnnies by a 23-7 margin, en route to a 32-20 shots advantage in the game. The Auggies turned a 50-50 possession tie into a 57-to-43-percent possession advantage in the game.
• The Auggies tied the game at 1-1 in the 74th minute on a free kick, after a Saint John's player was sent off for collecting his second yellow card.
Ceazar Daniell (SR, Portland, Ore./Cleveland HS) pounced on the rebound of
Christopher Plaza Alvarado's (SO, New Brighton, Minn./St. Anthony Village HS) free kick from the top of the 18-yard box, slamming it home for his second goal of the season.
• A second Johnnie player was sent off on a second yellow card in the 75th minute, leaving the visitors with just nine players. But Augsburg could not take advantage, and instead Saint John's got the eventual game-winning goal with 4:37 remaining, on a header in front off a free kick from midfield.
•
Carver Tierney (SR, Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo HS) had eight shots, including three on-target, while
Diego Veit (SR, Vina Del Mar, Chile/Centro Educacional de Adultos Rafael Sotomayor) had six shots, and Plaza Alvarado had four shots.
• Goalkeeper
Christian Hodges (FY, New Albany, Ohio/Tree of Life Christian School) had seven saves.
QUOTES FROM AUGSBURG COACH GREG HOLKER
• "This was as disappointing as it gets because we were up two players and in full attack mode. It seemed as if it was going to be a matter of when, not if ... and then it all got flipped on its head. The silver lining is that we will get some time before the NCAA tournament to get players healthy and recovered, and not have to play four games in seven days."
• "
Diego Veit was outstanding tonight for us. He created moments that we should have capitalized on, and will moving forward. He's been so good replacing
Mizael Harris, and that's given us the chance to stay in the top three in the country since we lost Miz."
• "Ceazar did really well to put away the second chance from Plaza's free kick. He was busy on the ball for us when he came on.
Caleb Ibarra played really well in his minutes, and that makes a lot of sense because he has been training so hard and so well lately. I was really pleased with his contribution."
• "Good luck to Saint John's as they move on, and congratulations on a really impressive campaign - they beat us twice, so they definitely earned it."
FOR THE FOES
• Eli Ryan scored from Thomas Thiesing in the 38th minute, and Alex Bowman scored on Foster Conlin's free kick in the 86th minute for Saint John's.
• Cole Hanson had 12 saves in goal for the Johnnies.
