Simonson named MIAC Athlete of Week for 3rd time

Kayla SimonsonMINNEAPOLIS -- For the third time this season, Augsburg University goalie Kayla Simonson (FY, Delano, Minn./Delano HS) was named Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women's Hockey Athletes of the Week on defense, it was announced on Monday.

Simonson picked up a pair of wins in goal, with 48 saves on 51 shots (.941 save percentage) and 1.50 goals against-average, as Augsburg clinched its third MIAC regular-season title, and first since 1999-2000, with a sweep of Saint Mary's. She had 33 saves in the Auggies' 3-1 home win on Friday, and had 15 saves, to go along with an assist on the Auggies' first goal, in Augsburg's 3-2 road win on Saturday.

Simonson finished the regular season with a 12-3-0 record, 1.47 goals against-average and .943 save percentage (362 saves, 22 goals allowed). Her 1.47 GAA is tied for second-best among MIAC goalies, with her .943 save percentage tops in the conference.

Now 21-3-1 overall and 16-2-0 in MIAC play, Augsburg is the top seed in the five-team MIAC postseason playoffs. Augsburg will host a playoff semifinal game next Saturday (3/1) at 7 p.m. at Ed Saugestad Rink, hosting the winner of Wednesday's quarterfinal game between No. 5-seed St. Olaf College and No. 4-seed Saint Mary's. The Auggies are ranked No. 2 in the latest USCHO.com Division III national poll and No. 4 in the D-III Hockey News national poll.
