HOW IT HAPPENED

The goal was Munzing's fifth of the season.
• Tierney scored his ninth goal of the season in the 27th minute, gaining the ball on a long upfield pass from Jeffrey Richter (SR, Portland, Ore./La Salle Catholic College Prep HS) and depositing it in the net.
• Augsburg surrendered its first goal of the season in the 56th minute, ending a 595:21 scoreless streak, but Auggie goalkeeper Christian Hodges (FY, New Albany, Ohio/Tree of Life Christian School) collected five saves to claim his seventh win of the season. Augsburg has now outscored its opponents by a 23-1 margin on the season.

QUOTES FROM AUGSBURG COACH GREG HOLKER
• "We started off really well, creating a few high quality chances that led up to the goal that Mitchel Munzing scored from Carver Tierney. That was well constructed, and then when Jeffrey Richter found Carver over the top to get in 1v1 on their goalkeeper, we knew he would score."
• "At halftime, we were fully in control, but we knew the first 10 minutes of the second half would be chaotic and challenging. The question was more about our response -- if we scored, the game was done, and if they scored, it was gonna be stressful. It got real stressful real fast, and we learned a bit about ourselves emotionally. It was not our best performance, and we were not our best selves through that struggle. That being said, we still did enough to win the game."
• "That's the first time we've been set piece negative on the year, and to still win is pretty impressive. What's more impressive was our overall pre-conference slate -- to come out of it 7-0 with 23 goals for and just one against is something we didn't have on the bingo card on Aug. 16."
• "While that run of games was difficult and fun, now the important part of our season begins on Wednesday when we host the defending MIAC champions, Gustavus, at Edor Nelson Field to open conference play. Gustavus just hammered Luther 4-2, bouncing back nicely from their lone setback to perennial NCAA participant Calvin College. They have two very dynamic players up top that will pose a threat from the beginning so this game will certainly entertain. Our conference is one of the best in the country, hands down -- and to start off the MIAC with a matchup like this brings tremendous challenge and equally tremendous opportunity."

FOR THE FOES
• Luka Breslin scored from Hayden Saul and Adam Kaup in the 56th minute for the Warhawks.
• Austin Waite had four saves in goal for UW-Whitewater.

UP NEXT
• Augsburg opens Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Wednesday (9/17) at 7:30 p.m. at Edor Nelson Field, hosting Gustavus Adolphus College.
