DECORAH, Iowa --
Mitchel Munzing (SR, Portland, Ore./Grant HS) and
Jeffrey Richter (SR, Portland, Ore./La Salle Catholic College Prep HS) scored goals for Augsburg University, as the Auggie men's soccer team claimed its fourth straight shutout win to open the season, a 2-0 nonconference triumph at Luther College on Friday evening.
THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Augsburg 2, Luther (Iowa) 0
LOCATION: Luther College Soccer Field, Decorah, Iowa
RECORDS: Augsburg 4-0-0 overall, Luther 2-1-0 overall
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Munzing scored his third goal of the season in the 19th minute. A throw-in by
Remus Repcak (JR, Tualatin, Ore./Tualatin HS) was headed in a crowd in the six-yard box by a Luther defender, and Munzing corralled the ball at the top of the penalty box, popping a shot off his right toe past the Norse goalkeeper.
• Richter scored his first goal of the season on a set piece.
Jacob Thao (JR, St. Paul, Minn./Champlin Park HS) served a corner kick through the six-yard box, where Richter headed it on a bounce into the goal.
• Luther claimed a 10-8 advantage in shots, but Auggie goalkeeper
Christian Hodges (FY, New Albany, Ohio/Tree of Life Christian School) earned his third shutout to start his collegiate career, with a two-save effort.
• Augsburg's defensive third played a stout game, as just two of Luther's shots were on-frame. Richter,
Cole Pettit (JR, Milwaukee, Wis./Nicolet HS) and
Eric Riera (Jr, Fridley, Minn./Columbia Heights HS) played the full 90 minutes in the backfield.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• Augsburg has now outscored its opponents by a 19-0 margin in its first four games of the season, a goal total that leads all NCAA Division III schools nationally.
QUOTES FROM AUGSBURG COACH GREG HOLKER
• "This was an incredible test for us, and starts a very difficult portion of our schedule. To come away with three points on the road is impressive, but the manner with which we did it was what really makes me proud. We missed three starters today and the depth of the team showed itself.
Diego Veit and
Eric Riera were standout performers tonight, filling in for
Ceazar Daniell and
Joseph Swallen, and
Jacob Thao was equally impressive and set up the second goal with a really good service from the corner, as
Asher Johnson was unable to play."
• "
Remus Repcak was really busy dealing with Mungari, who's an absolute handful, but he shut him down and went the distance across a back four that all played every minute.
Christian Hodges was tested for the first time in his young career and he came up big with a diving push save on a headed free kick. He also froze Mitidieri on the penalty by holding his position, forcing him to hit the bar, and then he came out early to tackle away a potential chance outside the box. Overall, the backline was impenetrable on the night for our fourth consecutive shutout."
• "This team is a lot of fun, there's a great energy about it, and everyone is willing to give something for the group. That's all a coach can ever ask for."
FOR THE FOES
• Francesco Mungari and Enzo Mitidieri had two shots each for Luther.
• Norse goalkeeper Aitor Lopez had two saves.
