Auggies drop opener in series of top-five teams

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Augsburg University, ranked No. 3 in the latest USCHO.com Division III women's hockey national poll and No. 2 in the D-III Hockey News Division III national poll, fell to Hamline University, 6–2 in the opener of a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference series on Friday afternoon at TRIA Rink. Hamline, ranked No. 5 in both polls, took control early with four first-period goals. Augsburg's power play capitalized once in the opening frame, but Hamline's defense limited the Auggies to just two goals overall. Despite Augsburg's 34 shots on goal, Hamline's goaltender made 32 saves to secure the win. This game snapped Augsburg's six-game winning streak.

GAME RECAP
The first period began with Augsburg's Emily Schoeberl winning the opening faceoff, but Hamline quickly took the lead with an unassisted goal by Ashlyn Abrahamson at 19:36. Despite trailing, Augsburg responded with consistent pressure, highlighted by Aunna Schulte's power-play goal at 09:19, assisted by Jenna Allen and Emma Brandenburger, reducing the deficit to 2-1. Schulte now has seven goals and six assists for 13 points, the second-most points on the squad. Hamline regained momentum with two subsequent goals, including one from Grace Delmonico at 08:17. The period concluded with Hamline leading 4-1.

Augsburg applied consistent offensive pressure during the second period, generating numerous shot attempts but initially struggled to convert. Despite multiple power play opportunities, Augsburg was unable to find the back of the net early in the period. Augsburg faced a challenging third period as Hamline extended their lead early on with a goal by Thorson at 14:43, assisted by Klemz and Maddy Belisle. Despite several attempts, Augsburg's offense struggled to find the net, with numerous shots either saved by Hamline's Kendra Nordick or blocked by the defense. Augsburg's power play opportunities, including one following Abigail Chamernick's penalty at 13:26, did not result in goals. The period concluded with Augsburg unable to alter the score, and the game ended with a 6-2 victory for Hamline.
