Auggie men beaten at buzzer by Johnnies

MINNEAPOLIS -- In a game featuring 16 lead changes and 11 ties, a three-pointer with three-tenths of a second left gave Saint John's University an 84-81 victory over host Augsburg University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball contest on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Saint John's pulled out to a 13-point lead, 28-15, halfway through the first half, but Augsburg used a 14-0 run over a 2:09 span later in the half to take a 34-33 advantage. The Auggies led 47-44 at halftime, and neither team led by more than seven points the rest of the way. Tied at 81-81 with 1:01 left, the teams traded scoreless possessions, with the Johnnies gaining the ball with 26 seconds left. The Johnnies' Baiden Bean connected on a pull-up three-pointer as the buzzer sounded, but the officials put three-tenths of a second back on the clock. A tip three-point attempt by the Auggies' Elias Batala (JR, Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview HS) hit off the back rim as time expired.
• Batala led the Auggies with a career-high 25 points, his fourth 20-plus-point effort of the season, hitting 7-of-15 from the field with three 3-pointers. He added four rebounds, two assists and two blocked shots.
JJ Semanko (FY, New Hope, Minn./Hopkins HS)  scored 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field, adding six rebounds.
Hanif Muhammad (SO, Minneapolis, Minn./Breck HS) scored 15 points on 6-of-12 shooting, adding five assists and four rebounds.
Isaac Rabaey (SR, Hastings, Minn./Hastings HS) scored eight points with six rebounds, three assists and two steals.
• Augsburg connected on 49.1 percent (28-of-57) shooting from the field, while Saint John's hit 54.7 percent (29-of-53). The Johnnies outrebounded the Auggies by a 35-26 margin, and had 40 points-in-the-paint, compared to 26 for Augsburg.

FOR THE FOES
• Saint John's was led by Peyton Podany, who nearly had a triple-double with 23 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists.
• Charlie Theis scored 16 points with five rebounds.
