MINNEAPOLIS — The Augsburg University women's soccer team dropped a 2-0 nonconference decision to Willamette University on Saturday at Edor Nelson Field. The Auggies were limited to two shots with none on goal, while facing 20 Bearcats shots.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The game was the first for new Augsburg head coach Danielle Mendez. The game started 30 minutes late due to extreme heat, with the temperature hovering in the upper 80s, along with high humidity.
The Auggies fell behind in the first half when the Bearcats' Haleigh Seeling scored at 22:51, on a deep punt from goalkeeper Isabella Arias-Lasalde that got past the defenders, putting the visitors ahead 1-0.
Earlier,
Claire Smothers saved Claire Warthen's third-minute shot as the Auggies kept the Bearcats off the board during a four-shot opening stretch, and Smothers finished the half with four saves. The Auggies did not concede during the Bearcats' two late corner kicks and two shots in the final six minutes, but went into halftime trailing 1-0.
Smothers made three saves in the first 15 minutes of the second half, keeping the Auggies within 1-0 through 60:08. The Bearcats added to the lead at 63:16 on Erica Stotts' goal, assisted by Haleigh Seeling, moving the score to 2-0.
The Auggies' recorded chances came on
Charlotte Sussman's shot at 61:19 and
Eliza Cory's attempt after a 76:18 corner, but the half ended with the Bearcats closing out a 2-0 result.
Smothers played all 90 minutes in goal and finished with seven saves, making four in the first half and three in the second.
