2010 Auggie Awards -- Female Most Improved Team of the Year Finalists

GOLF (7th/10 at MIAC championships in 2009 … 10th/10 at MIAC championships in 2008) --
Under head coach Ted Vickerman and assistant Laura Patrick, Augsburg finished the fall half of the 2009-10 season with a 374.3 team stroke average, so far the third-best team stroke average in school history, behind the 2004-05 (364.9) and 2003-04 (370.8) seasons. The Auggies claimed one of its best-ever finishes at the MIAC championships, finishing seventh with a 1,092 score -- the best score for a 54-hole event in school history and a three-spot improvement over last season. The Auggies tied their best-ever team finish at the conference meet, joining the 1997 Auggies that placed seventh out of eight teams. Augsburg’s final-round 359 in the conference meet was its best single round since the 2004-05 season. Augsburg had two golfers finish in the top 20 at the league meet, as Stefani Zappa became the third Auggie to ever earn All-MIAC honors with an eighth-place finish, and Johanna Frykmark placed 16th.

TRACK AND FIELD (11th/12 at 2009 MIAC outdoor championships; 10th/12 at 2010 MIAC indoor championships … 11th/12 at 2008 MIAC outdoor championships, 11th/12 at 2009 MIAC indoor championships) --
Under head coach Dennis Barker, the Auggie women’s track and field team placed placed 11th at the MIAC meet with 13.0 points, scoring eight more team points than the 2008 finish. Augsburg’s Caroline Senungi placed second in the 100-meter hurdles to earn All-MIAC honors, while Whitney Holman placed fourth in the 100-meter dash to earn All-MIAC honorable-mention honors. At the 2010 MIAC indoor championships, the Auggies claimed a 10th-place finish with 37.0 team points, moving up one spot from their finish a year ago. Two Auggies captured conference titles -- Holman in the 55-meter dash and Shanek Telphia in the 200-meter dash with a meet record. Telphia also placed third in the 400 meters, an event she qualified to compete in at the NCAA Division III national championships.

VOLLEYBALL (17-14 overall, 6-5 MIAC--t4th/12 in 2009 … 17-12 overall, 5-6 MIAC--t6th/12 in 2008) --
Augsburg concluded the 2009 season with one of its most successful seasons in school history. The Auggies finished with a 17-14 overall record (6-5 MIAC) and finished in a tie for fourth place in the MIAC regular-season standings, the team's best finish since 1985 when they tied for third and most conference wins since 1998. The Auggies collected 17 wins in both 2008 and 2009 -- the first back-to-back above-.500 finishes for Augsburg since the 1985-86 seasons. The Auggies also qualified for the MIAC postseason playoffs for the first time since the conference moved to the current six-team format in 2001. Augsburg was a young squad, with just three seniors on the roster.
