2011 Auggie Awards - Men's Outstanding Team of the Year Finalists

Baseball Team 2010
2010 BASEBALL (21-22 overall, 12/8 MIAC--4th/11, MIAC playoff runner-up) -- Under seventh-year head coach Keith Bateman, Augsburg finished in fourth place in the MIAC standings, earning a trip to the conference postseason playoffs for the second time in school history. Augsburg won its first two games in the MIAC postseason to reach the playoff finals for the second time in the last five years. Augsburg claimed conference sweeps of Macalester, Bethel and Gustavus, and scored wins in three of the six meetings with national power St. Thomas, including a 3-2 win in the opening game of the MIAC playoffs. Bateman’s teams have recorded 16 or more wins in each of his seven seasons at Augsburg, including 20-plus wins in 2005, 2009 and 2010.
Men's Hockey Team 2011
HOCKEY (14-9-3 overall, 8-6-2 MIAC--t3rd/9, MIAC playoff qualifier) -- Under fifth-year head coach Chris Brown, the Auggies reached the MIAC postseason playoffs for the third straight year and fourth time in the last five seasons. Augsburg outscored its opponents by a 139-108 mark this season, and closed the regular season on a seven-game unbeaten streak (6-0-1), including a six-game winning streak, to clinch a berth in the MIAC playoffs. The Auggies also had a five-game winning streak midway through the season. Augsburg claimed conference sweeps of St. John’s, St. Mary’s, St. Olaf and Bethel. For the second straight year, Augsburg’s season came to an end with a multiple-overtime loss at Gustavus, this season a two-overtime, 4-3 loss in the first-round playoff game in St. Peter.
Men's Soccer Team 2010
SOCCER (16-5-1 overall, 7-2-1 MIAC--t2nd/11, MIAC playoff champion, NCAA Division III playoffs 2nd round) -- Under seventh-year head coach Greg Holker, Augsburg finished the 2010 season with a school-record 16 victories and the MIAC's postseason playoff championship for the first time in school history. Augsburg qualified for the NCAA Division III national playoffs for the second time in the last three years, and finished with a double-digit win record for the fourth time in the last five years. In the MIAC playoffs, the Auggies opened with a 1-0 semifinal win over Carleton, then topped Concordia-Moorhead 3-2 in overtime in the championship match. Augsburg scored another overtime victory in its first NCAA tournament game, a 1-0 triumph over St. Scholastica in Whitewater, Wis. The Auggies fell 3-0 to Wisconsin-Whitewater in the second round of the playoffs. Holker was named MIAC Coach of the Year for the second time in his career, and defender/forward Chad Gilmer was named MIAC Player of the Year.
Wrestling Team 2011
WRESTLING (8-5-1 in dual meets, NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional champion, 2nd place in NCAA Division III National Championships) -- Under third-year head coach Mark Matzek, Augsburg finished second at the NCAA Division III national championships, its 21st top-two national tournament finish (11 national titles, 10 second-place finishes). Augsburg extended its streak of finishing in the top four in NCAA competition to 23 straight years, the longest active top-four streak among any NCAA wrestling program, regardless of division, and the second-longest top-four streak in NCAA wrestling history. All five Auggie qualifiers for the NCAA tournament earned All-American honors, marking the 23rd straight year that Augsburg has had five or more All-Americans in wrestling competition. Zach Molitor won the national title at 174 pounds, while three Auggies were national runners-up -- Jared Massey (197), Orlando Ponce (157) and Tony Valek (149). Augsburg won the NCAA Great Lakes Regional for the ninth straight season and finished third at the NWCA Division III National Duals.
