Chris Johnson (Augsburg '10, MAL '14) enters his eighth season as a member of the Augsburg men's hockey coaching staff in 2017-18. A two-time All-American during his playing career, Johnson served as an assistant coach for seven seasons before becoming a volunteer assistant coach in 2017-18.
Playing Career/Achievements:
As a forward, Johnson appeared in 104 games in his Augsburg career, with 41 goals and 74 assists for 115 points, and was a member of teams that earned Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference playoff berths three times in his four seasons. He was the MIAC's scoring champion in both overall and conference play in the 2008-09 season, leading the league in points and assists in both overall and conference games-only play. He had a goal or assist in 64 of his 104 career games.
He earned All-MIAC honors in his junior and senior seasons, while earning All-MIAC honorable-mention honors his first two campaigns and earning MIAC All-Rookie Team honors in 2006-07. He was named to the American Hockey Coaches Association/RBK Hockey All-American (West Region) second team in both 2008-09 and 2009-10, while also being named to the All-USCHO West Region honorable-mention squad by U.S. College Hockey Online in 2008-09. Johnson also earned MIAC Player of the Week honors three times in his career.
Personal/Family Notes:
A native of Madison, Wis., Johnson was a finance major at Augsburg, and was a finalist for the Male Honor Athlete and Male Athlete of the Year awards at the 2010 Auggie Awards. He was also a finalist for the Male Athlete of the Year award at the 2009 Auggie Awards. Johnson completed graduate work for his Master of Arts in Leadership from Augsburg in 2014.
A two-year captain for the Auggies, Johnson is a member of a legendary American hockey family. His father, Mark Johnson, served as the head coach of the silver-medal-winning U.S. Olympic women's hockey team at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics (and is also the women's hockey head coach at the University of Wisconsin), and was a member of the "Miracle on Ice" 1980 U.S. Olympic men's hockey gold-medal-winning team. Chris' grandfather was the late "Badger Bob" Johnson, a legendary coach at both the collegiate and pro level. Chris' younger brother, Patrick Johnson, played collegiately at the University of Wisconsin and was a 2008 seventh-round draftee of the NHL's Montreal Canadiens. His younger sister, Megan Johnson, is a member of the Augsburg women's hockey team.
