Joe Voeller (St. Thomas '07) has served on the Augsburg men's soccer coaching staff since 2016. Voeller was an assistant coach on the Auggie staff in 2011, helping to lead the Auggies to a 10-5-3 overall record and 6-3-1 in league play, earning a spot in the MIAC postseason playoffs. He returned to the Auggie staff in 2016.
Previous Coaching Experience/Achievements
Voeller moved east to Hamline University, serving as the Pipers' first assistant coach in the 2012 and 2013 seasons. He also coached girls' soccer at Minneapolis South High School from 2012-14 and boys' soccer at Hill-Murray High School in the 2014-15 seasons. He earned second-place finishes in conference play in both of his seasons at Minneapolis South, and had a 16-15-5 record at Hill-Murray, reaching the section semifinals in both seasons.
Prior to coaching at Augsburg, Voeller served as boys' soccer varsity head coach at Mounds View High School from 2008-12 and was girls' soccer co-head coach at Hill-Murray High School in the 2005 season. At Mounds View, he earned Section Coach of the Year in 2010, when his team won the section title and advanced to the state tournament.
He has also coached on the youth level with several Twin Cities clubs. He has served as director of coaching and player development at the Southeast Minneapolis Soccer Club (2010-13), U9/10 director at the Maplebrook Soccer Club (2013-15), U11-14 director at Tonka United (2016-2020). He is currently the Director of Coaching at North Suburban Soccer Association.
Playing Experience/Achievements
Voeller played three seasons of men's soccer at St. Thomas (2004-07), where he earned All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honors in both the 2006 and 2007 seasons, and D3kicks.com All-West Region honors in 2007. In 53 career games as a Tommie, he scored 21 goals and had eight assists for 50 points, including six game-winning goals. He recorded seven goals and three assists for 17 points in his junior season and 10 goals and four assists for 24 points his senior year.
In his three seasons, the Tommies went 33-14-8, including 14-0-3 in games where Voeller scored a goal. The Tommies were 21-9-8 in MIAC games in Voeller's three seasons, reaching the MIAC postseason playoffs in the 2007 campaign. Voeller transferred to St. Thomas after spending his initial collegiate year at Marquette (Wis.). He played for the Minnesota TwinStars (NPSL) from 2007-09.
In his high school playing days at Hill-Murray HS, he was a two-time all-conference selection and an all-state selection his senior year, leading his team in scoring in his final two prep seasons.
