Since arriving at Augsburg in 2010, head coach
Michelle McAteer (Minnesota-Duluth '03) has revitalized the Auggies, turning the women's hockey team into an annual playoff contender.
Augsburg Coaching Highlights
2023-24: Led the team to its eighth consecutive MIAC playoff appearance (excluding the 2020-21 shortened season). The Auggies finished as the MIAC regular season runners-up.
2022-23: Guided the team to its seventh consecutive MIAC playoff appearance (excluding the 2020-21 shortened season). The Auggies finished as both the MIAC regular season and postseason runners-up.
2021-22: Led the team to its sixth consecutive MIAC playoff appearance (excluding the 2020-21 shortened season). Four Auggies earned MIAC postseason honors, with both Kensie Malone and Patyon Allen earning All-MIAC honors.
2019-20: Led the team to its best MIAC record in program history, while matching the best overall record from the 1999-20 season. Its the fifth consecutive 13-plus win season and fifth consecutive MIAC post-season playoff appreance. Seven Auggies received MIAC postseason honors, with Bridget Wagner earning Co-Player of the Year. Nikki Nightengale earned second team CCM/ACHA All-American honors for the second consecutive year.
2018-19: Led the team to its fourth consecutive 13-plus win season and fourth consecutive MIAC post-season playoff appearance. Three Auggies received MIAC postseason honors. Nikki Nightengale earned second team CCM/ACHA and USCHO.com All-American honors.
2017-18: Led the team to its third consecutive 13-plus win season and third consecutive MIAC post-season playoff appearance. Four Auggies received MIAC postseason honors.
2016-17: Led the team to a second-place MIAC finish and the MIAC playoff title game for the first time since the 2003-04 season. Augsburg's 14-4-0 MIAC record marks its most conference wins in a single season in program history, while its 19-8-0 record was its second-best record in varsity program history. Six Auggies earned All-MIAC or All-MIAC honorable mention honors, and Megan Johnson was named the MIAC's Elite 22 Award winner for academic excellence in women's hockey.
2015-16: Led the team to a third-place MIAC finish and the MIAC playoff semifinals; the team's highest MIAC finish since winning the conference regular-season and playoff titles in 1999-00. Seven players, the most in McAteer’s era, earned All-MIAC or All-MIAC honorable-mention. Forward Kayla Fuechtmann was named the 2016 recipient of the Sheila Brown Award, honoring a senior women's hockey player who displayed excellence both on and off the ice.
2011-12: Led team to 6-11-8 overall record and eighth-place finish in the MIAC regular season standings; the team's six victories were more than the prior two seasons combined (five), and the team's eight ties were the most in the 16-year history of the program.
2010-11: Earned first-career head coaching victory with 3-1 win against Finlandia University on Jan. 2, 2011.

Playing Career/Achievements:
A native of Scarborough, Ontario, McAteer was a member of UMD teams that won national titles in 2001, 2002 and 2003, while also winning Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) regular-season titles in 2000 and 2003, and WCHA playoff titles in 2000, 2001 and 2003.
An assistant captain for the Bulldogs in the 2001-02 and 2002-03 seasons, she finished her 136-game career with 35 goals and 32 assists for 67 points. Playing in the first four seasons of UMD’s women’s hockey history (1999-2003), she was a member of teams that went 108-19-13 (.818) in her career, including a 73-13-10 (.813) record in WCHA play.
McAteer was named the team’s Most Valuable Player in the 2001-02 season, while also earning WCHA All-Academic Team and AWHCA All-American Scholar honors three times each. McAteer was the first Bulldog to earn a WCHA Postgraduate Scholarship, earning the award in 2003.

Personal/Family Notes:
McAteer earned her bachelor’s degree in communications from UMD, and earned her master’s degree in speech communication from the University of Wisconsin-Superior. She resides in South Minneapolis, Minn. with her wife,
Gina.
