MIAC FOOTBALL AWARDS

MINNEAPOLIS – Eight Augsburg College football players earned All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honors for their performances during the 2011 season, it was announced on Tuesday.

Earning All-MIAC first-team honors were Auggie running back Tyler Maxwell (FY, Prior Lake, Minn.) and tight end Adam Carl (SO, Eagan, Minn.). Earning All-MIAC second-team honors were quarterback Marcus Brumm (SR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS), offensive lineman Chad Thompson (SO, Maple Grove, Minn.), defensive lineman Edmond Smith (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./North HS), linebacker Bryce Vee (JR, Coon Rapids, Minn./Blaine HS) and defensive back Tyler Phillips (SR, Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS). Defensive lineman Aaron Perry (JR, Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) was an honorable-mention all-conference honoree, and Vee was also named to the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team.

The all-conference honors were the first for seven of the eight Auggies. For Brumm, it was his third all-conference honor, after earning All-MIAC first-team honors in 2009 and All-MIAC second-team honors last year.

Tyler Maxwel
Maxwell was the lone first-year player among the 35 athletes named to the All-MIAC team. Despite playing in just seven games due to injury, Maxwell set a single-season school record with 13 rushing touchdowns. He led the MIAC's overall statistics in rushing yardage per-game (121.3), as one of only two conference running backs to average more than 100 rushing yards per-game. He also led the conference in points per-game (12.0), with his 14 touchdowns (13 rushing, one receiving) tied for the third-most among conference players. Maxwell's 146.1 all-purpose yards per-game (849 rushing, 174 receiving) was second-best among MIAC players this season.

On the season, Maxwell rushed for 849 yards on 169 carries – the most rushing yardage and carries for an Auggie since Marcus LeVesseur's single-season school records of 256 carries for 1,024 yards in 2004. Maxwell had 100-yard rushing performances in five of his seven games this season and set single-game school records with four touchdowns twice this year. His 173-yard, four-touchdown effort in his first collegiate game against Hamline on Sept. 10 earned him MIAC Offensive Player of the Week honors.

Adam Carl
Carl also had a career season for the Auggies in 2011, leading the team with 58 receptions and five receiving touchdowns, while standing second on the team with 616 receiving yards. His 5.80 receptions per-game were tops among all MIAC receivers, and his 61.6 receiving yards per-game were sixth-best – both per-game averages tops among MIAC tight ends.

Carl had back-to-back career-best performances in two of Augsburg's last three games -- a 10-reception, 103-yard, two-touchdown effort in Augsburg's 31-23 win over Macalester on Oct. 29, and an 11-catch, 115-yard, two-touchdown performance in Augsburg's 37-20 win at Gustavus on Nov. 5. Carl earned D3football.com Team of the Week honors for his efforts against Macalester.

An accounting major with a 3.50 grade-point average, Carl also was named to the Capital One Academic All-District 6 (Division III) football squad earlier this month.

Marcus Brumm
Brumm led the MIAC in passing yardage per-game for the third straight year, averaging 229.5 passing yards per-game. He completed 196-of-340 passing for 2,295 yards and 15 touchdowns in 2011. He earned MIAC Offensive Player of the Week honors after a 26-of-42, 401-yard, four-touchdown effort, including a last-second, game-winning touchdown pass, in Augsburg's 32-31 win at St. John's on Sept. 24.

In his three seasons at Augsburg (27 games), Brumm finished second in school history in every career passing category – 607-for-1,102 for 6,974 yards and 46 touchdowns, the touchdown total tied for second with Derrin Lamker (1993-97). Brumm also rushed for 472 yards and seven touchdowns in his career.

This season, the Auggies compiled 3,578 yards of total offense (357.8 yards per-game), including a conference-leading 229.5 yards per-game passing. The offensive line also allowed just 14 quarterback sacks in 2011, the third-lowest total among MIAC teams.

His 10.8 tackles per-game was tied for the best average in the MIAC this season. Vee had double-digit tackle totals in six of his 10 games this season, including a career-high 17 against Concordia-Moorhead on Oct. 15, tied for the second-most tackles in a single game in the MIAC this year.

Vee was named to the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team, as part of the conference's sportsmanship initiative. Members of the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team are selected by their coaches and teammates as individuals who demonstrate ideals of positive sportsmanship both on and off the field of competition.

A business administration major with a 3.65 grade-point average, Vee also was named to the Capital One Academic All-District 6 (Division III) football squad earlier this month. Vee was also an Academic All-MIAC honoree in 2010.
