Carney named Outstanding Track Athlete

MIAC WOMEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS AWARDS

Ashley Carney
MINNEAPOLIS -- For her multiple conference championship effort at the 2012 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, Augsburg College sprinter Ashley Carney (JR, Lakeville, Minn./South HS) was named as the Outstanding Women's Track Athlete of the meet, it was announced on Wednesday.

Carney won titles in both the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes at the conference championships at Concordia-Moorhead on Saturday, becoming the first MIAC female athlete to sweep the two sprint events since Sheena Porter of St. Thomas accomplished the feat in 2007.

Carney won the 100-meter title in a championship- and school-record time of 11.89 seconds, breaking the school mark of 11.95 seconds set by Tonnisha Bell in 2006, and the conference outdoor meet record of 11.96 seconds set by Augsburg's Astrid Larssen in 1998. Her 24.93-second effort in winning the 200 is the third-fastest time in the event run by an MIAC athlete this season, while her 11.89-second time in the 100 is the top time among MIAC sprinters this season.

Among NCAA Division III sprinters nationally, Carney now has the third-fastest time in the 100 and 25th-fastest time in the 200. She will have one more meet to improve those times for possible berths in the NCAA Division III Outdoor National Championships, at the Wisconsin-La Crosse Last Chance Qualifier on Thursday (5/17). The NCAA Division III Outdoor National Championships will be held at Fritz B. Burns Stadium in Claremont, Calif. (Claremont-Mudd-Scripps host) May 24-26.

Her two titles over the weekend bring her conference championship total to three this season, after winning the 60-meter dash in a meet-record 7.74 seconds at the MIAC Indoor Championships in March. She also was part of two conference title-winning relays last season -- the 800-meter indoor title and the 400-meter outdoor title -- along with the outdoor 400-meter relay conference title in 2010. Carney has earned seven All-MIAC honors and two All-MIAC honorable-mention honors in her career.

Carney qualified for the 2010 NCAA Outdoor National Championships as part of the 400-meter relay, and earned All-America honors with an eighth-place finish in the 60-meter dash at this season's NCAA Indoor National Championships in March.
