10 Auggies earn All-MIAC football awards

2013 MIAC FOOTBALL AWARDS

MINNEAPOLIS – Ten Augsburg College football players were honored recently by the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference for their accomplishments this season with inclusion on the All-MIAC football squads.

Six Auggies earned spots on the All-MIAC first teams on offense and defense, with one Auggie – Hakeem Bourne-McFarlane (SR, Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS) – earning honors as both a kick returner and as a defensive back. Quarterback Ayrton Scott (SO, Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest HS), wide receiver Joey Sonnenfeld (SO, Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS) and tight end Adam Carl (SR, Eagan, Minn.) earned first-team honors on offense, while Bourne-McFarlane, defensive lineman Chris DeVet (JR, Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) and linebacker Michael Juberian (JR, Richfield, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's HS) earned first-team honors on defense. Carl was also named to the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team.

Earning All-MIAC second-team honors on defense were wide receiver/running back Jerise Washington (JR, Roseville, Minn./Mounds View HS), running back Phil Putratz (JR, Mazeppa, Minn./Zumbrota-Mazeppa HS), offensive lineman Chad Thompson (SR, Maple Grove, Minn.) and defensive back Felix Coleman (JR, Alexandria, Minn./Jefferson HS).

Adam Carl
Carl was named to the All-MIAC first team for the third straight season, while Thompson earned his third-straight All-MIAC second-team honors. Scott was an All-MIAC first-team selection last season, while Bourne-McFarlane and DeVet earned All-MIAC second-team honors last year. It is the first all-conference honors for Sonnenfeld, Juberian, Washington, Putratz and Coleman.

Carl has earned a reputation as one of the top NCAA Division III tight ends in the nation during his career. Carl earned D3football.com All-America first-team and Beyond Sports Network All-America honorable-mention recognition in 2012. He was also named to the D3football.com All-West Region teams the past two seasons -- a first-team selection in 2012 and second-team selection in 2011. An accounting major with a 3.43 grade-point average, Carl was also recently named to the Capital One Academic All-District squad.

This season, Carl finished with 52 receptions for 696 yards and four touchdowns. His 52 receptions were sixth-most among MIAC receivers in overall statistics, while his 69.6 receiving yards per-game average was eighth-most among MIAC receivers -- both totals tops among conference tight ends. His 13.4 yards per-reception average was 10th-best among MIAC receivers.

Carl finished his 38-game career with 164 catches for 1,953 yards and 18 receiving touchdowns, while also recording one rushing touchdown in his career. His 18 receiving touchdowns are sixth-most in a career in Augsburg history.

Carl was also named to the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team, as part of the conference's sportsmanship initiative. Members of the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team are selected by their coaches and teammates as individuals who demonstrate ideals of positive sportsmanship both on and off the field of competition.

Ayrton Scott
One of just three sophomores among the 37 players named to the All-MIAC first team, Scott had another solid year as both a passer and rusher. He completed 205-of-346 passes for 2,767 yards and 25 touchdowns against 15 interceptions, while rushing 132 times for 647 yards and five touchdowns. His 276.7 passing yards per-game and 25 touchdowns are both tops among MIAC players in overall statistics, while his total passing yardage and 205 completions are both second-best. The 2,767 passing yards are fourth-most in a single season in school history, while the 25 touchdowns are tied for third-most.

Among NCAA Division III players nationally, Scott currently ranks seventh in total offense, averaging 341.4 yards per-game. He also ranks among the top 25 players nationally in five other categories – 17th in total passing yards (2,767), tied for 18th in passing touchdowns (25), 18th in passing yardage per-game (276.7), tied for 19th in total points responsible for (184) and 23rd in points responsible for per-game (18.4).

In his 20-game career, Scott now has completed 378-of-629 passes for 5,012 yards and 51 touchdowns against 27 interceptions, with the 51 touchdowns now second-most in Augsburg history and the 378 completions now fifth-most. He has also rushed 341 times for 2,083 career yards and 17 touchdowns, with the 2,083 yards second-most in school history and the 17 touchdowns now third-most. Scott was a D3football.com All-West Region third-team selection in 2012.

Hakeem Bourne-Mcfarlane
Bourne-McFarlane led the MIAC's overall statistics in kickoff return average (32.0), while also averaging 24.6 yards per-punt return. As a defensive back and wide receiver, he finished his senior season with 48 tackles (24 solo), including 1.5 tackles for loss, with team highs of five interceptions and seven pass breakups. He also caught three passes for 17 yards and two touchdowns. His five interceptions were tied for the MIAC's lead in overall statistics.

In his final collegiate game on Nov. 16 at Carleton, he returned two kickoffs for touchdowns, an 86-yarder in the second quarter and an 87-yarder in the fourth quarter, setting a single-game school record for kickoff return yardage with 193 yards on three runbacks. He also had a punt return for a touchdown this season.

Nationally, Bourne-McFarlane ranked second among Division III players in kickoff return touchdowns (2), tied for fourth in kickoff return average (32.0), tied for fifth in punt return touchdowns (1) and tied for 22nd in interceptions per-game (0.5).

In his 40-game career, Bourne-McFarlane caught 101 passes for 1,321 yards and 12 touchdowns on offense, while claiming 101 tackles (54 solo) on defense, with 2.5 tackles for-loss, a fumble recovery, forced fumble, 10 pass breakups and 11 interceptions -- the interception total tied for sixth-most in school history. He returned three kickoffs, one punt and one interception back for touchdowns in his career, averaging 22.0 yards per-kick return and 14.4 yards per-punt return in his career. Bourne-McFarlane was a D3football.com All-West Region third-team selection last year.

Chris Devet
A defensive lineman, DeVet finished third on the team in total tackles with 63 (28 solo), including team highs of 12.0 tackles for-loss and 5.0 sacks, to go along with three pass breakups, six quarterback hurries and a fumble recovery. His 63 tackles were tied for 15th among MIAC players in overall statistics, while his 12.0 tackles for-loss were third-most and 5.0 sacks were tied for fourth-most.

He had five or more tackles in eight games this season, including 10 tackles (two solo) in a 55-20 win over Hamline on Sept. 28 and 10 tackles (nine solo) in a 49-45 loss at Carleton on Nov. 16. He had two sacks in a 17-14 home loss to St. Thomas on Nov. 2.

In 20 career games, DeVet now has 115 career tackles (49 solo), including 20.5 tackles for-loss, 7.5 sacks, four pass breakups, a fumble recovery and a forced fumble.

A chemistry major with a 3.75 grade-point average, DeVet also was named to the Capital One Academic All-District squad this season.

Joey Sonnenfeld
A transfer from Division I North Dakota State, Sonnenfeld had a strong debut season for the Auggies this year, leading the team with 67 receptions for 1,087 yards and 13 touchdowns. His 108.7 receiving yards per-game average and 13 receiving touchdowns were both tops among MIAC players in overall statistics, while his 1,087 yards were second-most, his 6.7 receptions per-game were third-most and his 67 receptions were third-most.

Nationally, Sonnenfeld tied for seventh among Division III players in receiving touchdowns (13), tied for 11th in receiving yards per-game (108.7), tied for 14th in total receiving yards (1,087) and tied for 34th in receptions per-game (6.7). His 13 touchdowns are fifth-most in a single season in Augsburg history.

This season, he had six games with 100 or more receiving yards, eight games with six or more catches and four games with two receiving touchdowns, including a season-best 10-catch, 162-yard, two-touchdown effort in Augsburg's 34-16 win over Macalester on Nov. 9.

Micheal Juberian
A transfer from St. Thomas, Juberian was one of the most dominant defensive players in the MIAC in 2013, leading the league with 141 tackles (63 solo), a tackle total currently 17 more than the second-place person in the MIAC's overall statistics, while also recording 10.0 tackles for-loss, 2.5 sacks, two pass breakups, a quarterback hurry, a fumble recovery and a forced fumble. His 14.1 tackles per-game average was also tops in the MIAC's overall statistics, while his 10.0 tackles for-loss were eighth-most.

Juberian's 14.1 tackles per-game average was third-highest among NCAA Division III players nationally, with his 141 tackles also currently third-most. His 6.3 solo tackles per-game average is 31st-best nationally.

Juberian had double-digit tackle totals in nine of his 10 games this season, including a 21-tackle (seven solo) effort in Augsburg's 41-17 win over St. Olaf on Oct. 19, 19 tackles (six solo) in a 31-28 loss at Bethel on Oct. 5, and an 18-tackle (five solo) effort in Augsburg's 19-16 win over Gustavus on Sept. 21.

Chad Thompson
Thompson was the leader of an Auggie offensive line that helped the team produce 4,538 yards of total offense in 2013, a 453.8 yards per-game average that ranked second among MIAC teams in overall statistics and 28th among NCAA Division III teams nationally. Augsburg averaged 172.0 rushing yards and 281.8 passing yards per-game this season. Augsburg's offensive line also provided solid protection, allowing just eight quarterback sacks and 40 tackles for-loss this season. The Auggies' 0.80 sacks allowed per-game average is tied for 19th-fewest among Division III teams nationally, while the team's 4.00 tackles for-loss per-game average is tied for fifth-best nationally.

Over Thompson's three seasons as a starter, Augsburg averaged 427.6 yards of total offense per-game (12,828 yards in 30 games), while allowing just 106 tackles for loss and 28 sacks.

A finance and accounting major with a 3.86 grade-point average, Thompson was named to the Capital One Academic All-District squad for the second straight year in 2013, after being named to the Capital One Academic All-America first team last season.

Jerise Washington
Washington proved his versatility as both a wide receiver and running back this season, catching 36 passes for 397 yards and a touchdown, while rushing 82 times for 392 yards and six touchdowns. He recorded 100-plus all-purpose yards in three games, including 205 yards in a 30-28 loss at Saint John's on Oct. 12 -- rushing 24 times for 130 yards, catching three passes for 17 yards and returning three kickoffs for 58 yards.

In his 29-game collegiate career, Washington has caught 71 passes for 770 yards and a touchdown, while rushing 210 times for 1,120 yards and 18 touchdowns. The 18 rushing touchdowns are currently tied for the most in Augsburg football history, tied with Dan Roff's 18 rushing touchdowns from 1978 to 1981.

Phil Putratz
Putratz returned to the Auggie lineup after injuries cut his 2012 season short and had a solid season, rushing 118 times for 582 yards and four touchdowns, while also catching 32 passes for 332 yards and three touchdowns. He had 100 or more all-purpose yards in five games this season. He had 24 carries for 141 yards and a touchdown in Augsburg's 34-16 win over Macalester on Nov. 9, and caught five passes for 104 yards and a touchdown in the Auggies' 19-16 win over Gustavus on Sept. 21.

In his 34-game career, Putratz now has 281 rushes for 1,369 yards and 13 touchdowns, while catching 55 passes for 597 yards and four touchdowns.

Felix Coleman
Coleman had a career year as a free safety in 2013, finishing second on the team with 83 total tackles (48 solo), along with 4.0 tackles for-loss, two interceptions, two pass breakups, a quarterback hurry, four forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. His four forced fumbles were tied for the MIAC's lead in overall statistics. He had 14 tackles (seven solo) in Augsburg's loss at Saint John's on Oct. 12, and 10 tackles (six solo) in Augsburg's win over Gustavus on Sept. 21.

In his 30-game career, Coleman now has 218 tackles (123 solo), including 6.5 tackles for loss, eight interceptions, nine pass breakups, four forced fumbles and a fumble recovery.

Under ninth-season head coach Frank Haege, Augsburg finished 5-5 overall, 3-5 in MIAC play in 2013. Augsburg completed its third straight finish of .500 or above, marking the fifth time in the 81 seasons of Auggie football that the feat has been accomplished. Augsburg is 36-34 since the 2007 season.
