2013 D3FOOTBALL.COM PRESEASON ALL-AMERICAN TEAM
MINNEAPOLIS -- For the second straight year, Augsburg College football tight end
Adam Carl (SR, Eagan, Minn.) was named to the
D3football.com Preseason All-America team, this year as a first-team honoree, it was announced on Tuesday.
It's the latest honor for Carl, who was
also named as a first-team preseason honoree by the Lindy's Sports Annuals' 2013 National College Football preview magazine and the Beyond Sports Network website. He was named a D3football.com Preseason All-America second-team honoree last season.
It's the fourth time an Auggie has earned Preseason All-America honors from
D3football.com, a national website covering NCAA Division III football, since the award was established in 2000; in addition to Carl's honor last year, Adam Hoffmann was named as a second-team center in 2004, and Royce Winford was named as a second-team wide receiver in 2008.
Carl earned
D3football.com All-America first-team and
Beyond Sports Network All-America honorable-mention recognition last season, while earning
All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference first-team honors for the second straight year. He was also named to the
D3football.com All-West Region team for the second straight year -- a first-team selection in 2012 and second-team selection in 2011.
In 2012, Carl finished fourth
among MIAC players in receiving yardage in overall statistics, with a team-best 640 receiving yards on 53 catches (second-most among MIAC players). His eight touchdown receptions were fourth-most among MIAC players, with all three totals tops among conference tight ends. Carl also had one rushing touchdown. Carl had four 100-yard receiving games in 2012, while he scored touchdowns in five of his 10 games.
In his 28-game collegiate career, Carl has 112 receptions for 1,257 yards and 15 touchdowns (14 receiving, one rushing).
Carl has earned All-MIAC and all-region honors in both football and baseball in his Augsburg career. Carl has earned All-MIAC honors in both 2012 and 2013, while earning American Baseball Coaches Association All-Midwest Region second-team honors in 2012.
Carl is one of four MIAC players to earn D3football.com Preseason All-America honors; Bethel senior linebacker Seth Mathis was a first-team honoree, while St. Thomas senior linebacker Tremayne Williams was a second-team honoree, as was St. Thomas senior punter Garrett Maloney.
Under head coach
Frank Haege, Augsburg finished 7-3 overall, 5-3 in MIAC play in 2012 -- the best overall record for the Auggies since finishing 10-2 overall (9-1 MIAC) in its 1997 MIAC championship season. The 7-3 record also marked Augsburg's second straight above-.500 overall finish -- the first time Augsburg has finished above-.500 in consecutive seasons since a three-year stretch from 1997 to 1999.
Augsburg opens its 2013 season on Saturday, Sept. 7 at 1 p.m., with a nonconference game at Concordia-Wisconsin. Augsburg's home opener is on Saturday, Sept. 21 at 1 p.m., as the Auggies host Gustavus at Edor Nelson Field.
