College Football Oct. 3 -- St. John's 19, Augsburg 13
MINNEAPOLIS Ben Sieben (Jr., Melrose, Minn.) caught a 20-yard pass from Tom Linnemann (So., Melrose, Minn.) with 5:15 remaining, giving St. John's University a 19-13 victory over Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football game Saturday night at Augsburg's Anderson-Nelson Field.
St. John's remains unbeaten at 4-0 overall and 3-0 in the MIAC, avenging a 20-10 loss last season, also at Augsburg. The Auggies, defending MIAC champions, fall to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in the MIAC. St. John's hosts also-unbeaten Bethel next Saturday, while the Auggies travel to Gustavus, which is unbeaten after Saturday's play.
Linnemann, who completed 19 of 29 passes for 190 yards, one touchdown and one interception, tied the game himself with 12:22 left in the fourth quarter, scampering on a 10-yard run to complete a seven-play, 54-yard drive.
Augsburg had led the game 10-0 at halftime, coming on first-quarter scores from
Martin Hlinka (Sr., Bratislava, Slovakia/Farmington HS) and
Jim Peterson (Sr., Eyota, Minn./Dover-Eyota HS). Hlinka nailed a 43-yard field goal, while Peterson caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from
Paul Tetzloff (So., Faribault, Minn.).
Chris Moore (So., Edina, Minn./St. Thomas Academy) scored St. John's first touchdown of the game on a two-yard run in the third quarter, followed by Hlinka's second field goal of the game for the Auggies, a 21-yarder that completed an 11-play, 74-yard drive.
Augsburg forced three first-half turnovers by St. John's, but the Johnnies only gave up one other turnover in the contest. Augsburg's Tetzloff threw one interception.
The Johnnie defense shut down Augsburg wide receiver
Scott Hvistendahl (Sr., Cannon Falls, Minn./Randolph HS), limiting him to 68 yards on seven receptions. The yardage mark broke a 10-game streak of receiving yardage totals of 100 yards or more. However, went over the 200 mark in career receptions and moved up on the NCAA Division III all-time receiving yardage record list. He is now in 10th place with 3,451 career yards on 203 receptions. The Division III career record, 4,311 yards, was set by Curt Barth of Eureka (Ill.) last year.
Sieben led the Johnnies with 65 yards on five receptions, while Adam Herbst (Sr., Sartell, Minn.) had 60 yards receiving on four catches, and Roland Buller (Sr., Anoka, Minn./Totino-Grace HS) had 52 yards on seven receptions. Moore led the Johnnies with 79 yards rushing.
Thane Drier (Sr., Durand, Wis.) paced the Auggies with 49 yards rushing on 12 attempts.
Tim Hamer (Sr., Lakeville, Minn.) had 86 yards on eight receptions to lead Augsburg.
Tetzloff, who made his first start since missing last week's win over St. Olaf with a hyperextended elbow injury, completed 22 of 48 passes for 214 yards.
Andy Zigan (Sr., Coon Rapids, Minn.) led the Auggies with 12 tackles (eight solo). He also was credited with blocking two extra points.
Jake Kern (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) had 10 tackles (six solo) and
Terry Gullette (Jr., St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) had three sacks.
Brandon Novak (Jr., Becker, Minn.), Joe Kaczrowski (Sr., Luverne, Minn.) and Grady McGovern (Jr., Northfield, Minn.) had nine tackles apiece to pace the Johnnies. Kaczrowski had two sacks, while Novak had one.

Pregame Media Notes:
The Augsburg College Auggies (3-0 overall, 2-0 MIAC) continue the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference season against the St. John's University Johnnies (3-0 overall, 2-0 MIAC) on Saturday, Oct. 3, at 7 p.m. at Augsburg College in Minneapolis.
Stadium: Anderson-Nelson Field (cap., 2,000).
Coaches: Augsburg,
Jack Osberg (8th season, 37-37); St. John's: John Gagliardi (46th season at SJU, 50th overall, 345-104-11).
Series: St. John's leads 50-7-2. Last year, Augsburg beat St. John's 20-10 at Augsburg's Anderson-Nelson Field.
Broadcast: KKMS-AM 980 with Tom Witschen on play-by-play Russ Bohaty on analysis. St. John's broadcast on KKJM-FM 92.9 (Spirit 93) of St. Cloud, Minn., with JG Preston and Jeff Bretherton. The St. John's broadcast can be heard live on the Internet (using Real Audio software) by clicking on this link to the St. John's website.
Outlook: St. John's and Augsburg clash in a key contest between two of the co-leaders in the MIAC. Last year, Augsburg beat St. John's 20-10 before an overflow crowd of 2,500 people at Augsburg's 2,000-seat Anderson-Nelson Field in Minneapolis. It was Augsburg's first win over St. John's in 17 years, and set the stage for the school's first MIAC championship since 1928 and national quarterfinalist finish in the Division III playoffs.
This year, the two teams have gotten off to 3-0 starts and meet in the second big meeting of MIAC powers this season -- last week, St. John's derailed St. Thomas 31-13.
Saturday night's game, again at Augsburg's Anderson-Nelson Field, is a meeting of two of the top receivers in the nation -- Augsburg's
Scott Hvistendahl and St. John's Adam Herbst. Hvistendahl, who is third in the nation in receiving yardage per game (182.3 yards) is in pursuit of Eureka's Curt Barth's record for career receiving yards (4,311). Hvistendahl has 3,383 career receiving yards on 197 career receptions entering Saturday night's game.
"The atmosphere of the game is a big-game atmosphere," said Augsburg head coach
Jack Osberg, who is going for his 38th win -- to go over the .500 mark -- on Saturday. "It will be a great college football evening. It is a special game. Anytime you play a good program, an established program, you step up to the challenge. We started to establish ourselves last year, and in order to keep moving up the ladder, there are the hurdles we have to overcome."
Drier scores fourth-quarter TD to give Auggies win over St. Olaf
NORTHFIELD, Minn. Running back
Thane Drier scampered 62 yards for a touchdown midway through the fourth quarter, giving Augsburg a 31-24 victory over St. Olaf Saturday at St. Olaf's Manitou Field.
The victory Saturday was the first for Augsburg at St. Olaf since 1928, and Augsburg's first in Northfield (against either Carleton or St. Olaf) since 1978. St. Olaf leads the all-time series against Augsburg 31-10, with the other eight Auggie victories in the series coming at either Augsburg home fields or the Metrodome. The win also brings Augsburg head coach
Jack Osberg to 37-37 on his career.
Drier's 62-yard run with 8:02 remaining, the longest of the season by an Augsburg running back, came on the first play from scrimmage after St. Olaf tied the game at 24-24 on a two-yard run for a touchdown by Jay Larsen. Drier rushed 12 times for 117 yards.
Linebacker
Andy Howard, later named MIAC Defensive Player of the Week, scored Augsburg's first defensive touchdown of the season, picking off a pass by St. Olaf's Peter Schultz and running 31 yards for the score.
Scott Hvistendahl and
Tim Hamer also had touchdowns, both coming on receptions from freshman quarterback
Joe Thorvig. Thorvig, filling in for injured regular
Paul Tetzloff, completed 11 of 33 passes for 170 yards, but was intercepted twice and fumbled the ball away once.
Hvistendahl caught seven passes for 115 yards, marking the 10th straight game in which he has caught 100 yards or more, dating back to Augsburg's win over Carleton on Oct. 11, 1997. The mark includes two NCAA playoff games. Hvistendahl, who holds every school career and single-season receiving record, caught his 31st career touchdown Saturday.
Schultz was sacked seven times in the contest, 2.5 each coming from Auggies
Guillaume Paek and
Jason Van Houten. Howard, who returned an interception for a score, also led the Auggies with 11 tackles (six solo) and one pass break-up.
Tom Fountaine had eight tackles (six solo).
The Hvistendahl Watch: Auggie WR now 11th in D-III receiving yards
Augsburg WR
Scott Hvistendahl (Sr., Cannon Falls, Minn./Randolph HS) continued his assault on the NCAA Division III receiving record books last Saturday with a seven-catch, 115-yard, one touchdown performance against St. Olaf.
Hvistendahl, who now holds every Augsburg career and single-season receiving record, caught his 31th career touchdown pass . The 115-yard effort was Hvistendahl's 10th 100-yard-plus receiving yardage effort in a row, dating back to Augsburg's game against Carleton on Oct. 11, 1997. The mark includes two NCAA playoff games.
Hvistendahl moved into 11th place in the NCAA Division III receiving yardage record book, with 3,383 yards on 197 receptions. The Division III record is 4,311 yards, set by Curt Barth of Eureka (Ill.) from 1994-97. Jeff Clay of Catholic (D.C.) also went over the 4,000-yard mark last year, with 4,101 career yards (1994-97). They are the only two Division III receivers to achieve the feat; in fact, only 11 receivers in the four NCAA divisions have surpassed the 4,000-yard barrier. Jerry Rice, who starred for Mississippi Valley State (Division I-AA) from 1981 to 1984 before becoming the NFL's top receiver, amassed 4,693 yards and 50 touchdowns on 301 receptions to hold the NCAA all-divisions career yardage record.
Hvistendahl is currently on pace (182.3 receiving yards per game) to top the Division III mark in Augsburg's ninth game of the year, against Bethel at Augsburg on Nov. 7. If he maintains the 182.3 yardage-per-game pace, he would end his career with 4,659 yards, just shy of Rice's record mark.
Augsburg a success at 'The Cage'
"The Cage" is what the players and coaches on the Augsburg College football team fondly refer to their cozy home along Butler Place in Minneapolis, Anderson-Nelson Field.
Augsburg has won seven straight games at "The Cage" dating back to 1996, including a 20-10 victory over St. John's in last year's home opener, also played at night. Augsburg has played 13 games at night (5 p.m. or later; nine at home, one on the road, four at the Metrodome) in head coach
Jack Osberg's eight seasons (1991-present). Augsburg's record in those games is 9-4.
Anderson-Nelson Field, has produced a 22-13 record during Osberg's tenure, including two perfect seasons -- 1993 (5-0) and 1997 (4-0). On artificial turf since 1991, the Auggies are 27-16, which includes all Augsburg home games, seven games at the Metrodome and one at the Fargodome in Fargo, N.D. Since Anderson-Nelson Field opened in 1984, Augsburg's record is 25-40-1 at home and 30-49-1 on artificial turf. Augsburg's overall record since 1984: 44-98-1.
"Every school likes to play at home," Osberg said. "Does playing on turf give us an advantage? It might. We build teams around the talent we have. We're built for speed and this field is built for speed."
Augsburg faces more milestones on Saturday against St. John's
Saturday night, the Auggies can claim several significant achievements if they pull off their second win in a row over St. John's:
-- Augsburg can beat the Johnnies in consecutive years for the first time since 1929, when the Auggies completed a string of three straight victories over the Johnnies. Augsburg beat the Johnnies 1-6 in 1927, 24-0 in 1928 and 19-2 in 1929. Since 1929, the Auggies have beaten the Johnnies just four times (1960, 19-12; 1973, 28-20; 1980, 21-10; 1997, 20-10) and tied the Johnnies once (1956, 7-7; the Auggies also tied St. John's in the teams' first meeting, 13-13 in 1926). St. John's leads the series 50-7-2.
-- Augsburg can maintain possession of first place in the MIAC, and Augsburg can improve to 4-0 for only the second time ever and the first since 1973, when the team went out to a 5-0 start en route to a 7-2 campaign, the previous best record in school history prior to last year's 10-2 campaign.
-- Augsburg head coach
Jack Osberg can become the first Auggie football coach ever to have an over-.500 winning percentage. Osberg is 37-37 entering Saturday's game; only one other coach, Bill Caris (19-19, 1972-75) ever has won as many games as he lost while coaching the Auggies. Osberg is also the second-winningest coach in school history; Edor Nelson (1947-69) coached the Auggies to a 58-110-10 record (.304 winning percentage).
Augsburg rated 9th in latest Football Gazette national poll
Augsburg moved up two spots to its highest national ranking ever, ninth, in this week's NCAA Division III Top 40 national ranking, published by Don Hansen's Football Gazette.
Lycoming (Pa, 2-0.), last year's national runner-up, remained the top-ranked team in this week's national poll, followed by the defending national champions, Mount Union (Ohio, 3-0).
Wisconsin-Whitewater (2-0) is the top Division III West Region team in the national rankings, at fifth. Other West Region teams: Central (Iowa, 4-0), eighth; Coe (Iowa, 4-0), 10th; St. John's (Minn., 3-0), 19th; Wartburg (Iowa, 3-0), 23rd; Willamette (Oregon, 2-1, 28th); and Wisconsin-Oshkosh (3-0), 40th.
Lycoming also leads the Columbus Multimedia (http://members.aol.com/d3central/) Division III Team Efficency Ratings, posted on the Columbus Multimedia Internet site. Wisconsin-Whitewater is third, Central (Iowa) is fifth, Augsburg is 11th, Coe (Iowa) is 12th, St. John's is 14th, Wartburg (Iowa) is 15th, Linfield (Oregon) is 23rd, and Wisconsin-Eau Claire and Gustavus Adolphus are both tied at 25th place.
