MINNEAPOLIS - Three players scored in double figures for Gustavus Adolphus College, as the visiting Gusties snapped a 13-game regular-season conference home winning streak for Augsburg College on Wednesday night, as the Gusties topped the Auggies 80-69 in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at Si Melby Hall.
Bob Southworth (Sr., Gibbon, Minn./Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop HS) led the winning Gusties with 20 points and five assists, while Mark McDonnell (Sr., Minnesota Lake, Minn./Maple River HS) had 19 points and three assists. Luke Schmidt (Sr., New Ulm, Minn.) had 17 points and game highs of 12 rebounds and five blocked shots.
Gustavus led 37-35 at halftime, and pulled out to a nine-point lead, 62-53, at the 6:41 mark of the second half. But the Auggies used a 9-0 run -- seven points from
Devean George (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret HS) to take its final lead of the game, 64-62, with 5:15 remaining. Gustavus again pulled away, however, with an 8-1 run to secure the game.
Augsburg had not lost a regular-season MIAC game at Si Melby Hall since Feb. 5, 1997, when St. Thomas handed the Auggies a 74-70 defeat. Augsburg had won all 10 MIAC games at home last season, but lost in the first round of the MIAC playoffs to St. Thomas, 77-76.
George led all scorers with 30 points and six rebounds. He was 8-of-10 at the free-throw line.
Kris Long (Sr., Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti HS) had 12 points and a team-high 11 rebounds, while
John Anderson (So., Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS) had 12 points on four 3-pointers.
Augsburg, now 4-2 overall and 1-1 in the MIAC, travels to Bethel on Saturday at 3 p.m. Gustavus, now 1-2 overall and 1-0 in the MIAC, hosts Hamline on Saturday afternoon.
