Augsburg 27, Macalester 7

ST. PAUL, Minn. (10/16/99) -- Making his first collegiate start at quarterback, John Goodale (So., Buffalo, Minn.) threw for 207 yards and a touchdown, while running back Brian Warden (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS) scored three touchdowns, leading Augsburg College to a 27-7 win over Macalester College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football game Saturday afternoon at Macalester Stadium.

The win breaks a two-game losing streak for the Auggies, who improve to 4-2 overall and 3-2 in the MIAC. Macalester falls to 2-4 overall and 1-4 in the MIAC.

Goodale completed 17 of 28 passes, with one interception, in leading the Auggies on offense in the victory. Meanwhile, Warden recorded his third 100-plus yard rushing game of the season, netting 143 yards on 28 carries.

After John Rotter (Jr., Montgomery, Minn./Montgomery-Lonsdale HS) opened the scoring for the Auggies with an eight-yard touchdown reception from Goodale, Warden scored the remaining Auggie touchdowns -- on an 11-yard run early in the second quarter, on a 24-yard run early in the third quarter and on an eight-yard run late in the period.

Augsburg put together a strong offensive game, compiling 374 yards of total offense (207 passing, 167 rushing). Meanwhile, the Auggie defense stifled Macalester's hope of gaining its second conference win in three weeks, by limiting the Scots to just 194 yards of total offense (113 passing, 81 rushing).

The Auggies picked off Macalester starter Aaron Quitmeyer (Jr., Williston, N.D.) twice -- once by Brent Peroutka (So., Faribault, Minn.) and once by Nate Loughran (Fr., Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS), who notched his team-high fifth interception of the season. In addition to the two interceptions, the defense also forced two Scot fumbles.

Augsburg's defense combined for six quarterback sacks in the game -- four from defensive lineman Matt Chappuis (So., Faribault, Minn.), who now has 7.5 on the season, already fourth-best in a single season in school history. The single-season record, 14, was set by Bob Anderson in 1995. Jason Van Houten (Sr., Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS) had two sacks, giving him 6.5 on the season and 16.0 on his career, tying him for third best for a career in school history. Anderson's 28.5 (1992-95) is the career record.

Jake Kern (Sr., Faribault, Minn.) and Mitchell Theisen (So., Waverly, Minn./Buffalo HS) led the Auggies with six tackles (five solo) apiece.

On offense, Damien Rochon-Washington (Jr., Chicago, Ill./Kenwood Academy) led the receivers with four catches for 70 yards. Five Auggies had two or more receptions in the game.

Macalester's lone score came on a 31-yard pass from Quitmeyer to David Schumacher (Jr., Minot, N.D./Bishop Ryan HS) in the second quarter. Quitmeyer threw for 112 yards, completing just seven of 24 passes. Schumacher had two catches for 49 yards to lead the Scots' receivers. Grant Heuett (So., Pueblo, Colo./South HS) paced the Scot rushers with 86 yards on 16 carries.

The Scots' Paul Aleckson (Sr., Whitewater, Wis.) led all players wih 15 tackles (11 solo), including a sack. In all, the Scots combined to sack Goodale eight times. Nick Fruge (So., Coon Rapids, Minn./Blaine HS) and Andre Porter (Fr., Rogers, Minn./Elk River HS) had two sacks apiece. Clark Boyesen (Fr., Eugene, Ore./Winston Churchill HS) had 10 tackles (nine solo).

Augsburg hosts MIAC co-leader St. Thomas next Saturday (10/23) at 1 p.m. at Anderson-Nelson Field. The game will serve as the football alumni celebration for Augsburg's 75th anniversary of intercollegiate athletics year-long celebration. Macalester plays at Bethel next Saturday.

PREGAME NOTES

THE GAME: The Augsburg College Auggies (3-2 overall, 2-2 MIAC) take on the Macalester College Scots (2-3 overall, 1-3 MIAC) in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football game on Saturday, Oct. 16 at 1 p.m., at Macalester Stadium in St. Paul, Minn. The series is tied 29-29-2, though Augsburg has won the last eight games in a row, including last year's 21-7 decision at Augsburg. The last time Macalester won in the series was on Nov. 10, 1990, when the Scots topped the Auggies 13-10 at the Metrodome. The last Macalester home win over Augsburg came on Oct. 18, 1986, when the Scots claimed a 30-6 win over the Auggies at Macalester Stadium.

COACHES: Augsburg head coach Jack Osberg is in his ninth season and currently has a 43-43 career mark. Macalester head coach Dennis Czech is in his second season and has a 4-11 overall record.

RADIO: All Augsburg football games are aired live on KYCR-AM 1570 in the Twin Cities, with Tom Witschen on play-by-play and Russ Bohaty on analysis. The pregame show begins at 12:30 p.m., with game action starting at 1 p.m. Outside the Twin Cities, Auggie fans can hear all the action using the TEAMLINE pay-per-call service. Using a credit card, call 1-800-846-4700 and enter the Augsburg team code, 5545. For more information and costs for TEAMLINE, call 1-800-846-4630.

LAST WEEK: Last Saturday, Augsburg dropped its second straight game, with a 38-12 Homecoming loss to Gustavus Adolphus at Anderson-Nelson Field. Macalester also dropped an MIAC contest last week, falling 60-14 at St. Thomas.

SCOUTING THE AUGGIES: Augsburg College aims to snap a two-game losing streak and gets its fortunes back on the right track with the road contest at Macalester.

The Auggies have been struggling offensively this season, in particular their last two losses -- a 55-0 decision at St. John's on Oct. 2 and a 38-12 home loss to Gustavus on Oct. 9. It's been quite awhile since opponents have so thoroughly dominated the Auggies in virtually all offensive categories. Consider:

-- First downs -- Opponents 110, Augsburg 60.
-- Total offense per-game average -- Opponents 385.2 yards per game, Augsburg 261.6.
-- Passing yardage per-game average -- Opponents 232.4, Augsburg 176.4
-- Rushing yardage per-game average -- Opponents 152.8, Augsburg 85.2.

Last week, Augsburg fell short in its goal to avenge the St. John's smashing against the Gusties, who dominated the Auggies from the second quarter on in the easy victory at Anderson-Nelson Field. The Gusties outgained the Auggies by a 422-179 margin in total offense, with 212 passing yards and 210 rushing yards. About the only positives on offense came from John Rotter (Jr., Montgomery, Minn./Montgomery-Lonsdale HS), who scored two touchdowns -- one on a 1-yard run and one on a six-yard pass reception.

On defense, the Auggies took advantage of two interceptions by Brent Peroutka (So., Faribault, Minn.), who returned one back 69 yards to set up the team's first score in the second quarter. Augsburg has had 13 interceptions this season.

Five players have 30-plus tackles for the Auggies this season -- Kurt Werk (Jr., Herman, Minn./West Central Area HS) with 42 (25 solo); Jake Kern (Sr., Faribault, Minn.) with 39 (28 solo) and one interception; Matt Chappuis (So., Faribault, Minn.) with 38 (23 solo), 7 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks; Andy Howard (Jr., Waseca, Minn.) with 35 (21 solo) and 2.5 tackles for loss; and Dane Lund (Sr., Burnsville, Minn.) with 31 (13 solo).

SCOUTING THE SCOTS: Macalester has already equaled its win total from last season, with a 35-22 nonconference win over Crown on Sept. 11 and a 27-16 win over Carleton on Oct. 2. More from Macalester's game preview:

Linebackers Nick Fruge (So., Coon Rapids, Minn. / Blaine HS), and Brett Cramer (Fr., Ardmore, Okla.) will lead the Scots in their attempt to bottle up the Auggies ground game. Fruge currently leads the Scots in tackles (45) and sacks (2). Cramer has tallied 33 stops so far for the Scots and led the team in tackles last week against St. Thomas with 15. Meanwhile the Scots hope to stymie the Auggies passing attack with safeties Nate Eitzmann (Jr., Hardy, Neb. / Chester-Hubbell-Byron HS) and Brandon Dixon (Fr., Rogers, Minn. / Buffalo HS), as well as cornerbacks Paul Aleckson (Sr., Whitewater, Wis.) and Mike Occhicone (Sr., Concord, Calif. / Clayton Valley HS). Eitzmann, Aleckson, and Occhicone lead the Scots in interceptions with all three having picked off two passes. Aleckson is second on the Scots in tackles with 37, followed closely by Eitzmann and Dixon, who both have 35 stops on the year. Karl Wassman (Sr., Orsmby, Minn. / St. James HS), Nick Elders (Jr., Amanda Park, Wash. / Lake Quinalt HS), and Steve Kelm (Sr., Brownton, Minn.) anchor Macalester's defensive line. Wassman is the leading tackler on the defensive line with 32 tackles, while Elders and Kelm both have 23 tackles. The Scots look to pressure the Augsburg offensive line, which has yielded 13 sacks so far this season.

The Macalester offense has relied heavily on the pass so far this year, and it looks to be the same again this weekend. The Scots offense features quarterback Aaron Quitmeyer (Jr., Willistown, N.D.) at the helm, who has continued to tumble Macalester all-time records this season. Last season Quitmeyer set the records for completions (23) and attempts in a game (54) as well as the records for attempts (332) and completions in a season (155). So far this season Quitmeyer has broken the record for passing yards in a game (312) and is also has a good shot at breaking the school record for touchdown passes in a season (18).

Macalester's leading receivers so far this season have been David Schumacher (Jr., Minot, N.D. / Bishop Ryan HS) and Ty O'Connell (So., Helena, Mont. / Capital HS). Schumacher is coming off a huge game last week against the University of St. Thomas, setting two Macalester receiving records, receiving yards in a game (207) and receptions in a game (9). Schumacher has totaled 24 catches for 402 yards and 2 touchdowns. O'Connell has 22 receptions for 229 yards and 3 touchdowns on the season. Grant Heuett (So., Pueblo, Colo. / South HS) leads Macalester's running game and is also a threat out of the backfield. Heuett has run 52 times for 208 yards and 2 touchdowns while catching 10 passes for 107 yards and 2 touchdown receptions.

One of the big keys to the production and effectiveness of Macalester's offense is its offensive line. Although the Scots line is young, they have progressed nicely so far this season. The line's only upperclassman is Jack Dusatko (Jr., Palmer, Neb.), and the leadership role falls squarely on his shoulders. Dan Frey (So., Northfield, Minn.) anchors the line at center and three freshmen, Clark Wohlferd (Fr., Sun Prairie, Wis.), Paul Dennis (Fr., Eleva, Wis. / Mondovi HS), and Eric Chapin (Fr., Cedar Rapids, Iowa / Washington HS) round out the offensive line. For the Scots to be successful on Saturday and the rest of the season, this group will play a big role in that success.

NEXT WEEK: Augsburg hosts St. Thomas next Saturday (10/23) at Anderson-Nelson Field, Minn. Game time is 1 p.m. and the game will be aired locally on KYCR-AM 1570. Macalester plays at Bethel next Saturday at 1 p.m.
