Gustavus 38, Augsburg 12

MINNEAPOLIS (10/9/99) -- Travis Prunty (Sr., Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) rushed for three touchdowns and Ryan Britz (Sr., St. Peter, Minn.) rushed for two more, leading Gustavus Adolphus College to a 38-12 victory over host Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football game Saturday afternoon at Anderson-Nelson Field.

Britz rushed for 103 yards on 13 carries, while Prunty rushed for 95 yards on 26 carries to lead a Gustie offensive onslaught. Gustavus outgained Augsburg by a 422-179 margin in total offense.

Gustavus improved to 4-1 overall and 3-1 in the MIAC, while Augsburg falls to 3-2 overall and 2-2 in the MIAC with its Homecoming game loss.

The win also served as a homecoming for Gustavus quarterback Joe Thorvig (So., Stacy, Minn.), who transferred to Gustavus last winter after playing the football season at Augsburg. Thorvig threw for 180 yards, completing 20 of 33 passes with just one interception.

Gustavus compiled 212 passing yards and 210 rushing yards in the contest. Augsburg could only muster 32 net rushing yards and 147 passing yards. The Gusties dominated every statistic in the contest, with 27 first downs to Augsburg's eight and a time of possession edge of 35:08 to 24:52.

Paul Tetzloff (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) was limited to 104 passing yards, completing just eight of 15 attempts with one touchdown and two interceptions before being relieved in the fourth quarter. Brian Warden (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS) rushed for 53 yards on 17 carries.

Tetzloff was sacked six times by a strong Gustavus defense, including three times by Tim Sundby (Jr., Detroit Lakes, Minn.). Ryan Timm (Sr., Huron, S.D.) and Ron Davis (Sr., Waseca, Minn.) had single sacks, with Ryan Bergstrom (So., Burnsville, Minn.) and Christian Bjornson (Sr., Pemberton, Minn.) combining for the other sack.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Gusties scored twice in under a minute. Britz scored on a five-yard run at the 7:05 mark, and after an interception and 30-yard return by Ben Bigelow (Sr., Kasson, Minn.), the Gusties scored three plays later on a six-yard run by Prunty with 6:17 to go in the quarter.

John Rotter (Jr., Montgomery, Minn./Montgomery-Lonsdale HS) scored twice for the Auggies, on a six-yard pass in the second quarter and on a one-yard run in the third period.

Gustavus closed the game with three rushing touchdowns, on a 23-yarder by Britz and on runs of three and nine yards by Prunty.

Bergstrom led the Gusties with 16 tackles (11 solo), while Sundby had eight tackles (six solo). Cameron Scripture (Sr., Kasson, Minn.) had six tackles (six solo).

Augsburg's defense was led by Brent Peroutka (So., Faribault, Minn.), who had two interceptions for 86 return yards, including a 69-yard return in the second quarter that set up Augsburg's first touchdown of the game.

Rob Just (Sr., Farmington, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS) led the Auggies with 11 tackles (eight solo), while Kurt Werk (Jr., Herman, Minn./West Central Area HS) had 10 tackles (seven solo). Jake Kern (Sr., Faribault, Minn.) and Andy Howard (Jr., Waseca, Minn.) had eight tackles apiece.

Augsburg plays at Macalester next Saturday (10/16), while Gustavus hosts Bethel.

LAST WEEK: Both teams dropped from the unbeaten ranks with losses last Saturday. Augsburg dropped a 55-0 loss at St. John's, while Gustavus fell at home, 18-17 against St. Thomas.

SCOUTING THE AUGGIES: Augsburg College welcomes the Gusties of Gustavus Adolphus College to Anderson-Nelson Field for this afternoon's MIAC contest, an important game for both teams.

Today's game could be considered a "bounce-back" game for both the Auggies and the Gusties, with both teams coming off of disappointing losses last week. Augsburg was shelled by unbeaten St. John's 55-0 last week in Collegeville, and Gustavus was upset in its homecoming game by St. Thomas, 18-17, in St. Peter.

In last week's game, Augsburg could not get any momentum established on offense, as the Auggies turned the ball over six times on interceptions. The Auggies could muster just 210 yards of total offense (32 rushing, 178 passing), while St. John's rolled out 420 yards of offense (244 passing, 176 rushing) and led 42-0 at halftime.

Augsburg's rushing game was held in check, as halfback Brian Warden (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS) could rush for just 30 yards on 15 carries. He did catch two passes for 51 yards, including a first-half 47-yard scamper that proved to be the biggest offensive gain of the day.

While Warden was stopped by the Johnnies last week, he is still in the process of putting together one of the best rushing seasons in recent years for the Auggies. He enters the game averaging 91 yards per game and 3.5 yards per carry, with 364 yards on 104 attempts and three touchdowns. The school single-season rushing records are 217 attempts (Wayne Graves, 1973) and 1,011 yards (Marty Alger, 1992).

The lone bright spot for the Auggies last week came from Jake Kern (Sr., Faribault, Minn.), who picked off his first pass of the season. Kern now has 11 interceptions on his career, fourth-most in school history. The career record, 17, was set by Jeremy Dalluge from 1992-95.

PARKING ADVISORY: Augsburg has a special parking deal for fans attending today's game. If you parked in the Fairview-University Medical Center's "Red" or "Yellow" ramps (across Riverside Avenue from Anderson-Nelson Field), show your ticket stub at the parking gate and you'll only have to pay $2 for the full day of parking.

EVENTS ON CAMPUS SATURDAY: There are several events taking place on the Augsburg campus this weekend to observe the annual Homecoming celebration. Later today, there are receptions for the CLASS program (Foss Center-Arnold Atrium, 3:30-5:30 p.m.), the Pan-Afrikan Student Union (Christensen Center-Marshall Room, 3:30-5:30 p.m.), the Music Therapy Program's 25th anniversary (Sateren Auditorum, 3:30-5:30 p.m.), along with reunions for the classes of 1949, 1959, 1974, 1989 and 1994. The annual Homecoming dinnner will be held at 5:30 p.m. (4:30 p.m. social hour) at the Christensen Center commons. Cost is $15. Distinguished Alumni (Ordean Torstenson '63, Jan Peterson Andrews '66, Dan Hanson '86 WEC) will be honored at the Homecoming dinner. On Sunday and Monday, the annual Christensen Symposium will also be held on campus. This year's theme: "Spirituality and Racial Diversity in the Context of the City."

SCOUTING THE GUSTIES: Like Augsburg, Gustavus Adolphus College also suffered a disappointing loss last week, as St. Thomas spoiled Gustavus' Homecoming with an 18-17 win at St. Peter last Saturday. The Tommies took the lead early in the fourth quarter, and then held off a late Gustavus rally, stopping the Gusties on a fourth-and-two from the Gustie 30-yard line with 1:32 remaining.

St. Thomas controlled the tempo of the game, putting together time of possession advantage of 35:29 to 24:31. The Gusties had 291 yards of total offense (182 rushing, 109 passing), while giving up 336 yards (247 passing, 89 rushing). Travis Prunty had a strong rushing performance for the Gusties, with 19 carries for 110 yards and a touchdown. Ryan Britz added 86 yards rushing.

Today's contest marks the return of Gustie starting quarterback Joe Thorvig to the Augsburg campus. Thorvig was a backup to Auggie quarterback Paul Tetzloff last season, then transferred to Gustavus at the semester break. Thorvig, who threw for 416 yards and four touchdowns in three game appearances (including a backup appearance in the Hamline game and one start against St. Olaf) for the Auggies last year, has thrown for 430 yards and two TDs this year in four starts for the Gusties. He has completed 34 of 60 passes, with three interceptions.

HOMECOMING SPECIAL FOR AUGGIES: Today is Augsburg's annual Homecoming game, with the theme of "Show Your Spirit." It's a special time for Augsburg athletics, as the school is celebrating the 75th anniversary of its intercollegiate athletic program. Three Auggies were inducted into the Augsburg Athletic Hall of Fame during a special ceremony Thursday night, attended by more than 400 Augsburg alumni and current Auggie athletes. The highlight of Thursday's activities was appearances by Hall of Famer Lute Olson '56, now the men's basketball coach at the University of Arizona and one of the most respected college coaches in the nation. Olson spoke at several functions during the day, telling Auggie students, staff, faculty and alumni of his love for his alma mater and how his Augsburg experience has shaped his career. Inducted into the Hall of Fame were:

-- David Boots '79 -- Boots, a two-year starter for Augsburg's men's basketball team, was the team's leading scorer, Most Valuable Player, an All-MIAC selection and All-NAIA District 13 selection as a senior in 1978-79. Boots set single-season school and MIAC records for free-throw percentage (.971 in MIAC play, .881 overall). In 1982-83, he was named head coach at Augsburg, and led the Auggies to consecutive MIAC championships in 1984 and 1985. He compiled a 100-56 record in six seasons at Augsburg. Boots moved to the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, S.D., in 1988, and has compiled a 227-94 record in 10 seasons there, the most wins of any USD coach. His Coyotes have won North Central Conference titles in 1993, 1994 and 1999 and have advanced to the NCAA Division II national tournament four times. Boots has earned multiple coaching honors, including NCC Coach of the Year three times and South Dakota Coach of the Year twice.

-- Kathy Korum '81 -- Korum was a standout athlete in three sports at Augsburg, including some of the most successful women's athletic teams in school history. As a volleyball player, she earned MAIAW Division III All-Tournament Team honors twice as the Auggies finished two of her seasons with 26-plus match victories. In softball, Korum earned MAIAW All-State honors as a sophomore pitcher in 1979 and was a key member of Auggie teams that dominated AIAW regional competition. She also made Augsburg history by becoming the first (and only) Augsburg female athlete to earn a letter in a men's varsity sport, when she competed on the men's golf team her junior year. She was an Auggie softball assistant coach for two years, and has spent 12 years as a high school coach in St. Paul. She served as a golf professional for nine years and currently works for the city of St. Paul as supervisor of municipal athletics.

-- Jeff Swenson '79 -- One of the best wrestlers to come through the Augsburg program, Swenson earned three All-American honors, winning an NAIA individual national title in 1979 at 167 pounds after finishing fourth the previous two seasons. Team captain as a senior, Swenson finished with a 102-17 record, earning three MIAC titles and two team MVP awards. Swenson was named Augsburg's head coach in the 1980-81 season, and has since established the Auggies as a national wrestling power, with a 223-30 dual-meet record during his tenure. Swenson's Auggies have earned 16 MIAC team titles in his 17 seasons of coaching (1980-84, 1986-present), including the last 13 titles in a row. Augsburg has won the NCAA Division III national championship five times in the 1990s (1991, 1993, 1995, 1997, 1998), while earning runner-up honors four times (1990, 1992, 1996, 1999). He has coached 19 individual national champions, 96 All-Americans and 102 MIAC champions. In addition, Swenson's Auggies have produced 47 NWCA Scholar All-Americans, three GTE Academic All-Americans, and in the two years the NWCA has awarded a Division III academic national title, Augsburg has finished second (1998) and first (1999) with team GPAs of 3.37 and 3.48 respectively. Swenson, who also played football for the Auggies, is also the school's assistant athletic director, staff liasion for the Alumni A-Club and an assistant football coach.

NEXT WEEK: Augsburg plays at Macalester next Saturday (10/9) at Macalester Stadium in St. Paul, Minn. Game time is 1 p.m. and the game will be aired locally on KYCR-AM 1570. Gustavus will host Bethel next Saturday at 1 p.m.
