MENOMONIE, Wis. (11/19/99) -- Augsburg College's men's basketball team opened up its seaon with an 82-72 win over defending tournament champion Cardinal Stritch Friday at the Best Western/Holiday Manor Tip-Off Classic at the University of Wisconsin-Stout's Johnson Fieldhouse.
Augsburg rebounded from a 44-38 halftime deficit and took the lead for good at 11:05 on a layup by
Travis Hinze (Jr., Janesville, Minn./Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton HS). Hinze, who finished the game with eight points, scored seven points in the final 11-minutes, five-seconds.
The Auggies were led by Justin Wismer (Sr., Golden Valley, Minn./Blake HS), who scored 25 points.
Jeoffrey Reed (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./De La Salle HS) added 14 points and
Jason Beckendorf (Sr., Lakeville, Minn.) chipped in 11.
Cale Vogel led Cardinal Stritch (4-1) with 25 points. Bill Neubauer had 13 and Scott Rember finished with 10.
Augsburg will play host Wisconsin-Stout in the tournament's championship game on Saturday (11/20) at 7 p.m. at Johnson Fieldhouse. Stout topped Soumi (Mich.) in the second game on Friday 99-47. Soumi will play Cardinal Stritch in the consolation game at 5 p.m. Saturday
