Viterbo (Wis.) 78, Augsburg 74
Game Summary:
LA CROSSE, Wis. (12/1/99) -- Host Viterbo College used a 14-2 run to end the first half and start the second, taking a lead it would not relinquish en route to a 78-74 nonconference men's basketball victory over Augsburg College Wednesday night at Viterbo's R.W. Baggs Sr. Gymnasium.
Viterbo improved to 4-3 overall with the victory, while Augsburg drops to 1-2.
The Auggies rallied from an early six-point deficit to stretch its lead to as much as 11 points, with a 36-25 advantage with 3:43 remaining in the first half. However, the V-Hawks closed the first half outscoring the Auggies by a 13-2 margin. Augsburg led 40-38 at halftime.
The V-Hawks took the lead for good on a jumper by Sean Madigan with 18:21 left in the second half. Viterbo led by as many as seven points in the second half, though the Auggies kept the game close down the stretch.
Madigan led the V-Hawks with 24 points, while Nick Dobbins had 16 points, nine rebounds and four assists. Luke Maher added 16 points, hitting four 3-pointers.
Augsburg was paced by
Jeoffrey Reed (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./De La Salle HS), who had 16 points, four assists and four steals.
Jason Beckendorf (Sr., Lakeville, Minn.) scored 13 pont and had six rebounds and four assits. Justin Wismer (Sr., Golden Valley, Minn./Blake HS) scored 12 points and
Kevin Van Rossum (Sr., Green Bay, Wis./Preble HS), in his first game after missing the first two with a sprained ankle, scored 11 points.
Augsburg opens Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with a home game against Concordia-Moorhead on Saturday (12/4) at 3 p.m. at Si Melby Hall.
