College Basketball -- Augsburg 66, Gustavus Adolphus 61

ST. PETER, Minn. (12/8/99) -- The Gustavus men's basketball team dropped its MIAC season opener 66-61 to Augsburg College in front of over 1,200 fans at Gus Young Court on Wednesday night.
A layup by Gustavus junior Bobby Johnson cut the Auggie lead to two at 62-60 with 1:17 remaining, but Augsburg senior point guard
Jeoffrey Reed hit a 12-foot jumper to push the lead to 64-60 and the Gusties could not get closer than three in the final minute of play.
Augsburg was led by a trio of players in double figures including Reed with 15, and Justin Wismer and
Jason Beckendorf with 12 each. Gustavus was led by Bobby Johnson's 25 points, of which 18 were scored in the second half. Kirk Walberg was the only other Gustavus player in doubles figures with 15.
Augsburg improves to 3-2 overall and 2-0 in the MIAC while Gustavus falls to 1-2 overall and 0-1 in the MIAC.
The contest got off to a slow start for both teams, as cold shooting and some sloppy ballhandling led to only 15 points being scored in the first 11 minutes of the contest as Gustavus led 8-7. Augsburg got rolling late in the half and outscored Gustavus 24-12 in the final eight minutes to take a 31-20 lead at the intermission. Reed scored seven first-half points for Augsburg while Walberg tallied eight for Gustavus.
The second half saw Gustavus go on a early 8-0 run and cut the lead to four at 36-32 with 15:34 remaining. Augsburg managed to keep a five-to-seven point lead for the bulk of the second half until a 5-0 run by the Gusties cut the lead to two at 60-58 with 1:52 remaining. But a clutch jumper and two free throws by Reed held the Gusties at bay in the waning moments.
Augsburg shot 41.5 percent from the field in the contest, making 22-of-53 attempts, while Gustavus shot 38.2 percent from the field, converting 21-of-55 attempts. The Gusties held a slight advantage on the boards with 39 rebounds to 34 for Augsburg.
Gustavus will play Hamline at 3 p.m. in St. Paul on Saturday (12/11), while Augsburg will return home to Si Melby Hall to face Bethel at 3 p.m.
