NORTHFIELD, Minn. (2/17/99)-- Laurie Peterson (Jr., Freeborn, Minn.) scored 12 of her 17 points in the second half to lead the Carleton Knights past Augsburg 68-54 in women's basketball action at West Gym Wednesday night.
The fast-paced and physical Auggies got on the board first, with a basket from guard
Jill Ruprecht (Sr., Glendale, Wis./Nicolet HS). But Renee Willette (Fr., Minneapolis, Minn.) swished two free throws at 18:35, Bridget Seegers (So., Elkhorn, Wis.) followed with a field goal 40 seconds later, and the Knights never looked back. Carleton's strong shooting in the first half (57.7 percent on field goals) offset a brief second-period slump, as they handed Augsburg its 13th consecutive defeat, 68-54.
Four Knights recorded double figures in scoring: Peterson, who jumped 17 points closer to 1,000 (only 37 remaining); Seegers, who added six rebounds to her 15 points; Willette, with 12 for the evening, and guard Lisa Cawley (So., Brooklyn Center, Minn.), who tied her career high with 11 points. Peterson also pulled down nine boards.
For Augsburg,
Liz Meskan (So., New Prague, Minn.) and
Rachael Ekholm (Fr., Richfield, Minn.) scored 13 and 10 respectively, and
Erin Brockberg's (So., Pipestone, Minn./Pipestone-Jasper HS) 13 rebounds led the column for both teams.
With this win, Carleton set a new school record with 10 conference victories. They also exceeded their 1997-98 win total, moving to 12-10 overall. Their next game will be Saturday, Feb. 20, when they take on conference and crosstown rivals St. Olaf at West Gym. Game time is 1 p.m. Augsburg hosts Hamline in its next game on Monday, Feb. 22 at 7:30 p.m. at Si Melby Hall.
