MINNEAPOLIS (9/29/99) -- Nicole Trnka (So., Morristown, Minn./Bethlehem Academy HS) had 19 kills, 18 digs and five blocks to lead St. Olaf College to a hard-fought, five-game victory over host Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference volleyball match at Si Melby Hall.
Game scores were 13-15, 15-13, 15-4, 12-15 and 15-11 in favor of the Oles, who improve to 12-4 overall and 3-0 in the MIAC. Augsburg drops to 5-11 overall and 1-2 in league play. St. Olaf has won its last 19 matches in a row over the Auggies, dating back to 1986.
The Oles used a balanced attack to top the Auggies, with four players scoring in double figures in kills. In addition to Trnka's 19, Christina Moses (Jr., New Brighton, Minn./Irondale HS) had 15 with 17 digs, Kristina Anderson (So., Grantsburg, Wis.) had 14 with a team-high 24 digs, and Christie Engle (So., Winsted, Minn./Mayer Lutheran HS) had 12.
Setter Brie Mattson (Fr, Anoka, Minn.) had 55 assists, five service aces and 14 digs for the Oles.
Augsburg also had a balanced attack, which included a season-high 13 blocks (four solo) as a team.
Missy Carlson (Sr., Cokato, Minn./Dassel-Cokato HS) led the way with 20 kills, 17 digs, four blocks and three service aces.
Angie Rieger (Jr., Courtland, Minn./New Ulm Public HS) had 15 kills, 17 digs and six blocks (1 solo), and
Jessica Ness (Sr., Cannon Falls, Minn.) had 11 kills, 19 digs and five blocks (three solo).
Emily Walen (Jr., Hastings, Minn.) had 49 assists, 16 kills and two blocks, along with three service aces.
Adrianne Rieger (Sr., Courtland, Minn./New Ulm Public HS) added four blocks.
Augsburg plays at Carleton on Friday, while the Oles host Concordia-Moorhead. Both matches are at 7:30 p.m.
