HOW IT HAPPENED
After kills by
Lilly Wynn and
Taliah Triggs helped the Auggies build a 4-0 lead in the first set, the Scots worked back to tie the opening set at 5-5 on Siennah Calkins' kill. Augsburg moved back in front with an
Ameerah Rogers kill, Rogers-Triggs block and
Lola Pilon's ace for an 8-5 lead, but Macalester kept closing the gap and tied the set again at 14-14. The Scots later scored three straight, including Morgan Stone's ace, to move ahead 21-20; after the Auggies tied it on a service error and the Scots evened it again at 22-22, a
Jovial King-
Grace Hamilton block and Wynn kill put Augsburg up 24-22. The Scots took the final four points, ending the set on Channing Smith's kill for a 26-24 win.
Macalester created the first sustained separation in the second set, moving from a 10-8 lead to 15-10 before the Auggies got three straight points, including an
Ava Carlson ace, to get back to 15-13. The Scots answered and built the margin to 21-15, later holding a 23-18 lead after a Hannah Eisenman kill. The Auggies' late push began with a King kill, and King served the next four points as Wynn put down a kill, the Scots committed a bad set,
Aloaha Ricke and
Gwynn Gorter combined on a block, and a Channing Smith attack error tied the set at 23-23. After the Scots reached set point at 24-23, Ricke tied it with a kill, Gorter put the Auggies ahead, and
Marley Mitchell finished the 26-24 set win with a kill.
The Auggies started the third set with kills from Ricke and
Gwynn Gorter around a Scots attack error for a 3-0 lead, but Macalester came back to tie it 4-4 on Lizzie Joo's ace and an Augsburg attack error.
Lilly Wynn's kill put the Auggies back in front, and they pushed the margin to 13-6 with help from blocks involving Rogers, King, Mitchell and Gorter, plus an
Elise Uphoff ace and another Ricke kill. After the Scots made it 13-7, the Auggies scored the next six points, with King serving two aces and
Gwynn Gorter and Wynn combining on a block during a stretch that made it 19-7. Augsburg reached set point at 24-10 on Rogers' kill, and after three Macalester points, Mitchell finished the set with a kill from King for a 25-13 win.
The Auggies built a 4-0 lead to start the fourth set on
Jovial King's serve, with the opening stretch capped by a Wynn-
Gwynn Gorter block on an Adonia Anene attack error.
Ava Carlson's service turn later moved Augsburg ahead 16-9 with kills by Wynn and Triggs before Carlson added an ace, and the Auggies still led 20-14 after a Macalester attack error. The Scots scored three straight points to get within 20-17 on kills by Anene and Maxine Holmes, but Carlson's kill and a Macalester service error helped Augsburg move back to 22-18. The Scots made another three-point push to close to 23-22, but a Gorter-Triggs block brought up set point on a Hannah Eisenman attack error, and Wynn's kill from King finished the set 25-22.
