Men's Basketball --Augsburg 90, Macalester 84
ST. PAUL, Minn. (1/10/00) -- Kevin Van Rossum (Sr., Green Bay, Wis./Preble HS) scored a career-high 29 points, hitting five 3-pointers, as his Augsburg College men's basketball team rallied for a 90-84 victory over host Macalester College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at Macalester Gymnasium.
Van Rossum's five 3-pointers give him 184 on his career, just one away from the school record of 185, set by Scott Syring from 1989-93. Van Rossum had an excellent shooting night Monday, hitting 8 of 11 from the field, 5 of 8 from three-point range, and 8 of 10 free throws.
Augsburg is now 6-3 overall and 5-1 in the MIAC, while Macalester drops to 3-7 overall and 3-3 in the MIAC.
Augsburg trailed 43-40 at halftime, as Macalester used a 12-0 end-of-half run to take the lead. Augsburg took the lead early in the second half and led by as many as 10 points before Macalester rallied to make the game close at the end.
Jason Beckendorf (Sr., Lakeville, Minn.) hit 16 points for the Auggies. Jeoffrey Reed (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./De La Salle HS) had 15 points, six rebounds and four assists. Nate Hoerr (Jr., Janesville, Minn./Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton HS) had 12 points, and Matt Davis (Jr., Marshall, Minn.) scored eight points and had a game-high 12 rebounds.
Patrick Russell (So., Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS) and Evan Bass (Jr., Chandler, Ariz.) each scored 19 points to lead the Scots, each scoring 11 points in the first half. Jumaane Saunders (Sr., Brooklyn, N.Y./ Hackley School) had 15 points and seven rebounds, and Mike Albo had 11 points. Bass led the Scots with five assists.
Augsburg hosts MIAC leader St. John's on Wednesday (1/10), while Macalester hosts Gustavus. Both games are at 7:30 p.m.
